BURBANK — With the start of the Pacific League fast approaching, Burroughs High’s football team had one last nonleague test Friday night.

Playing in its home opener, Burroughs received a big effort from standout running back Chance Bell and quarterback Steven Hubbell to roll to a 42-3 win against Santa Fe at Memorial Field.

Bell finished with two rushing touchdowns to lead the Indians (2-1), as he rushed for 156 yards in 21 carries, with 98 yards alone coming in the first quarter.

“He’s a special kind of player,” Burroughs Coach Keith Knoop said. “He’s strong and he’s always moving.

“It was great to see him have an outstanding effort like that. I liked the way we came out and responded in the first quarter. We still have things to work on, but we’re showing improvement each game.”

Hubbell completed 14 of 17 passes for 218 yards. He threw four touchdowns passes and two interceptions.

Burroughs won its second straight game and will begin league play at 7 p.m. Friday against visiting Muir.

Burroughs took a 7-0 lead when Hubbell threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Cade Boreland with 5:17 left in the first quarter. Bell then scored on a two-yard run to pad the advantage to 14-0 with 10 seconds to go in the quarter.

Santa Fe (1-3) received a 38-yard field goal from Alex Moreno to trim the deficit to 14-3 with 9:05 remaining in the second quarter. The Indians responded when Erick Hernandez caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Hubbell with 2:15 left in the first half.

Burroughs made it 28-3 when Hubbell lofted a pass down the right side to uncovered wide receiver Hunter Guerin with 5:44 to go in the third quarter. A one-yard touchdown run by Bell extended the lead to 35-3 with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter.

Hubbell then completed his performance with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Torin Harris in the opening minute of the first quarter.

Boreland caught five passes for 103 yards and Guerin had three catches for 63 yards.

The Indians limited the Chiefs to 165 yards of offense.

The game was stopped for nearly 20 minutes with less than a minute left in the third quarter. Santa Fe wide receiver Jake Risdol attempted to catch a pass and collided with a Burroughs defender. Risdol remained on the ground while he received medical attention. An ambulance was summoned and Risdol was taken to a hospital for observation.
