Bits and pieces from the local sports scene:

Finding out who is the city’s best: There will be a large group of youngsters running and jumping around at Burbank High today, that is, if the weather cooperates.

But the boys and girls will be scampering about for a purpose — to find out who are the best middle school track and field athletes in the city.

Athletes will be taking in the annual Burbank All-City Track Meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. between the three local schools, John Muir, Jordan and Luther Burbank.

The meet used to be a local tradition until it fell on hard times and was not run for almost 15 years. However, the event was revived in 2001 and has been going strong ever since.

Along with sprinting and distance races, athletes will also get a chance to show their talents in field events.

Jordan is hosting the meet, and Muir has won nine of the last 10 events since the meet was reinstated.

Also, if any former students from the three middle schools who participated in the all-city meet in the late-1960s thru the mid-’80s would like to obtain get copies of past results can get in touch with Branko Sevic at (818) 558-5320, ext 22823.

Former athletes from all three schools who took part in the meet in the past are encouraged to attend. There will also be refreshments offered at the meet.

Organizers said the meet will go on if there is light rain, but the event would have to be postponed if there is a heavy downpour.



Tubert earns award at Arkansas: Former Burroughs High and University of Arkansas freshman standout Emily Tubert was named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week last week.

Tubert paced the No. 12 Razorbacks to a come-from-behind win at the LSU Golf Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.

“Emily is a very solid player,” Arkansas Coach Shauna Estes-Taylor told the university’s website. “She really showed what she was made of against a very tough field. She has had a great year so far and really stepped up big. This is a well-deserved honor for Emily.”

Tubert finished third in the LSU Golf Invitational with a three-round score of 219 and helped pace the Razorbacks to the team title. She moved up on the leaderboard on the final day, shooting a 71, which was the third-lowest round for any golfer during the tournament.

The Razorbacks captured first-place honors with a seven-stroke win over second-place Virginia and a 12-stroke win over a third place trio of Alabama, Duke and Tennessee.

The Razorbacks are taking part in the 13th Annual Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, which concludes today.

The team is squaring off against a tough field and faces another challenging event on the par-72, 6,227-yard course.

Arkansas is the highest-ranked team, according to the recent Golfstat.com poll at No. 12, this week. The other teams in the field include No. 13 Iowa State, No. 26 Oklahoma, host No. 28 Colorado and No. 40 Minnesota.

Leading the charge for the Razorbacks is Tubert. She is ranked No. 30 this week and is the highest-ranking player in the field.
