Burroughs moves up to No. 1

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Burroughs in Cerritos Valley Christian Tournament: The Indians played well in the event Friday and Saturday, finishing second in the tournament.

On Friday, Burroughs (16-3) — which moved up to No. 1 in this week’s CIF Southern Section Division III poll — beat La Serna, 25-9, 25-12, Cabrillo, 25-15, 25-16, and Mayfair, 25-16, 25-17, to win its pool and advance to Saturday’s Gold Division playoffs.

On Saturday, the Indians started off the day with a win against Norwalk, 25-11, 25-18, then faced Division I Junipero Serra, which they also beat, 25-18, 25-22.

That set up a clash with host Valley Christian, which was ranked No. 1 in Division III. Burroughs played well, earning a 25-21, 25-17 win.

In the championship match against Palos Verdes, the Indians had good showing but lost in a close result, 25-21, 25-22.

Burroughs’ Tyler Yanez and Lucas Yanez were both selected to the all-tournament team.

Burroughs, which won a share of the Pacific League championship last season, opens league play at 3:30 p.m. today against host Arcadia.

Providence d. Bellarmine-Jefferson, 25-17, 25-18, 25-12: The Pioneers had no trouble notching the cross-town rivalry win Friday in a nonleague match at Providence.

TRACK AND FIELD

Burroughs in Mt. Carmel (San Diego) Invitational: The Indians had some solid marks in the meet Saturday.

In boys’ races, Anthony Monroy placed second in the Division I 1,600 meters in 4;15.10. His mark put him at No. 2 on the Burroughs all-time list.

Teammate Devin Rojas was third in the Division 4 400 (51.35), Brandon Andrade was seventh in the Division I 800 (1:58.13), Austin Allen was 12th in the Division I pole vault (13 feet 8) and the Division 2 4x400 relay team of Devin Rojas, Andrade, Monroy and Alejandro Rosas placed sixth.

In the girls’ portion of the meet, the Indians received a first-place effort from Shannon Kermah in the Division 2 long jump (16-3 1/2). She also finished third in the Division I triple jump (35-1 1/2).

Teammate Justice Shank was fifth in the Division I high jump (5-2), Gracia Innocentia was 14th in the Division 2 3,200 (12:04.76), Paris Vaughn was 14th in the Division I long jump (15-9) and the 4x100 team of Shannon Kermah, Nohely Romero, Jessica Heifetz and Vaughn placed third in the Division I race (52.02).

Burbank vs. Glendale: The Bulldogs began the Pacific League campaign with wins at home Thursday, as the boys earned a 90-46 victory and the girls were victorious, 90-45.

On the boys’ side, Burbank received wins from Ryan Slater in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.44 seconds), Andrew Wernstrum in the 800 (2:03), Daniel Mata in the 300 hurdles (43.62), Sergio Fraire in the 3,200 (10:02), Bruce Lee in the shot put (39 feet 7), Brandon Weiss in the discus (114-0), Daniel Kang and Haibert Sarkisian in the high jump (both 5-4), Alex Boze in the long jump (19-8 1/2), Boze and Andres Pulgarin in the pole vault (both 11-0) and Haibert Sarkisian in the triple jump (38-6).

The Burbank girls’ received double wins from McKenzie Paul and Jordan Card. While Paul won the 400 (1:01.37) and the 200 (27.12), Card took the shot put (26-6) and the discus (84-4) Other individual winners were Jenny Yoon in the 1,600 (5:48), Haley Pirruccello in the 100 hurdles (17.98), CJ Chua in the 800 (2:34), Griselda Pereyra in the 800 (12:50) Danielle Reid in the high jump (4-4) and Hannah Park in the pole vault (7-0).

SOFTBALL

Burroughs 9, Pasadena 0: The Indians were able to easily gain the Pacific League win Monday in a game that was made up after a rainout last week.

Haley Schulman was two for three with a run batted in, Sidney Ortega was two for three with a run scored and a stolen base, Shannon Trujillo had a hit, drove in three runs and had a stolen base and Taylor Buliavac and Heather Haynes had two RBI each to pace Burroughs.

In the circle, Schulman threw four innings, allowing one hit and striking out four and Haynes threw two innings, giving up two hits and striking out four.

Burroughs jumped out in front early, scoring three runs in the first inning. The big blow came on a two-run double by Haynes, who started in the circle.

Burbank 10, Glendale 3: The Bulldogs were finally able to open Pacific League play Monday, getting in a game that was postponed because of rain last week.

BASEBALL

Burbank 11, Glendale 0: The Bulldogs were able to get in their game Monday that was originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed because of rain.

Burbank scored runs in all but two innings to gain the win in its Pacific League opener.

The Bulldogs received a fine performance from starting pitcher Andrew Hernandez, who went seven innings, allowing just three hits, no walks while striking out six.

On offense, Paul Frias was three for five with a double, triple, three runs batted in and two run scored. Teammate Dylan Mersola was four for four with two doubles, a walk and four RBI, Chris Okimoto was two for four with three runs scored and Colson Cripps was two for two.

Burbank pushed across two runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.

Burroughs 3, Pasadena 1: The Indians improved to 1-1 in the Pacific League with a win in a rain makeup game Monday.

Burroughs scored all three of their runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a run-scoring double by Casey Kenney and hits by Chris Davies and Brian Pozos.

Burroughs pitcher Shaun Bradshaw had a commanding effort, scattering four hits and striking out seven to record the win.
