Special Olympic events slated in Burbank

As part of the host-town activities when the Special Olympic World Games come to Los Angeles later this month, Burbank residents will have an opportunity to attend a concert honoring athletes from Zimbabwe and Botswana who will stay in the city to acclimate to the region before the games’ opening ceremony.

The concert is scheduled for July 23 and will feature Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries, a 1950s and ’60s rock ‘n’ roll show that has performed worldwide at venues including Disneyland, Universal Studios and Six Flags Magic Mountain as well as three Super Bowls.

Parking will open at 5 p.m., and gates will open at 6 p.m. The delegates will be welcomed at 6:30 p.m., and Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries are slated to take the stage at 6:45 p.m.

The event is free, but a $5 donation for parking is requested. Tickets are available online at https://bit.ly/1HSJESE.

Sharon Cohen, the city’s library service director and host town committee chair, said there will be two other public events related to the host-town activities.

On July 22, the final leg of the torch run for the games will pass through Burbank with a ceremony at City Hall, 275 E. Olive Ave., at 9 a.m. The public will also have a chance to send off the athletes at a farewell event on July 24 at Woodbury University, 7500 N. Glenoaks Blvd., tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m.
