Festival of Arts applications due
The Festival of Arts is accepting artists’ applications through 4 p.m. Jan. 21 for its summer 2011 show.
The highly competitive regional juried fine art show, which features original artwork by southern Orange County artists, will run from July 3 through August 31 in Laguna Beach.
Artists who would like to apply for the 2011 fine art show should submit a CD with three digital images per media and a completed application form to the Festival of Arts. Artists from Aliso Viejo, Balboa, Balboa Island, Capistrano Beach, Coto de Caza, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Dana Point, Foothill Ranch, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Ladera Ranch, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest (El Toro), Mission Viejo, Monarch Beach, Newport Beach, Newport Coast, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano are eligible, and must be able to show that they have resided in one of the aforementioned cities for at least one year prior to the deadline.
Jurying fees are $50 per medium submitted. The jurors will score the submitted artwork based on quality, intention and content; excellence of craftsmanship; facility with media; excellence in the use of design elements; and professional presentation. The 2011 Festival of Arts jurors are Bruce Burr, Roger Folk, Ed Fosmire, Kate Hoffman, Jean Stern, Tom Swimm, and Robert Hansen.

Roosa lecture on performance art
The public is invited to a two-part lecture series given by Wayne Roosa at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday in Tankersley Hall of Laguna Presbyterian Church.
In his multi-media presentation, Roosa will examine the provocative world of contemporary performance and video art in parallel with the equally provocative ancient tradition of Old Testament prophetic acts. He claims the connecting thread is our “Sacred Discontent,” that discrepancy between human aspiration and human shortcoming, which we call “the human condition.”
Roosa is Professor of Art History and Department Chair at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Chair of the New York Center for Art and Media Studies in New York City.

Artman Gallery selected for LA Art Fair
JoAnne Artman Gallery was recently selected as an exhibitor at the 20th Annual Photo LA Art Fair, which will take place through Monday at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica.
The show is the longest running art fair west of New York, and the largest photo-based art fair in the country drawing more than 10,000 attendees. Photo LA brings together photography dealers from around the globe, displaying the finest contemporary photography, video and multi-media installations along with masterworks from the 19th century.
The Gallery will showcase photographers Brooke Shaden and Natalie “Miss Aniela” Dybisz, as well as a collaboration between the two women, photo realist Denis Peterson, photo based mixed media artist James Verbicky and New York photographer Ventiko.
‘Among Us’ to screen Thursday
The Laguna Beach Film Society will present “Among Us,” a Swedish film that explores mysticism and family dynamics, at 7 p.m. Thursday at South Coast Cinema in Laguna Beach.
Starring Michael Nvquist, the film explores how an unexpected event can drive a wedge between a couple’s well-ordered lives until a stranger with unusual powers enters their world.
Tickets are $15 at the door, $10 for students with ID. For $20, meet with Film Society members at 6 p.m. at Wells Fargo Bank’s Community Room for hors d’oeuvres and wine. Winter Jazz Series features Kristin Korb
Laguna Beach Live recently kicked off its new Winter Jazz Series with the Latin Jazz Trio, and will now present Kristin Korb Trio from 6 to 7:15 p.m. and 7:45 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday in the Catalina Room of Hotel Laguna.
Fans should note that this is a change from the postcards that were mailed, and Adam Schroeder Trio will now perform on Feb 2.
Korb has been praised by critics as the upright bass player and vocalist who sings in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, and plays with the swing of the great Ray Brown.
She is not just a singing bassist, but a premier singer with a personal approach and a deep sense of swing who transports you to other worlds with her ballads. And she plays a nasty bass, too. When she’s not on the road with her trio, she’s on the faculty at the University of Southern California and Azusa Pacific University.
Cover charge is only $10 per show with food and beverages available for purchase. Reservations can be made through the Hotel at (949) 494-1151 and will be held until 15 minutes before the show begins. The second show is expected to be lighter in attendance.
