Breakers cruise in league meets

The Laguna Beach High boys’ and girls’ track and field teams earned Orange Coast League victories on Tuesday by defeating Saddleback.

The Laguna girls defeated the Roadrunners, 109-19, and the boys’ team took a 91-36 victory.

Event winners for the Laguna girls were: Tessa Hopper (100 and 200 meters); Marisa Merchant (400 meters); Marina Paul (800 meters); Darby Winson (100 and 300 hurdles); Natasha Strickland (1,600 meters); Kay Baskevitch (3,200 meters); Marlee Grosher (long jump); Janie Crawford (triple jump); Monica White (high jump).

Event winners for the Laguna boys were: Reece Barton (100 and 200 meters); Mike Lee (400 meters); Jeff White (800 meters); Spencer Anderson (110 hurdles); Christian Menes (300 hurdles); Avery Crowl (long jump); Joey Gallo (triple jump); Kilar Pike (high jump); Ricky Delatorre (shot put and discus).

Both Breakers teams also scored victories March 22 against Calvary Chapel, the girls by an 85-35 score and the boys by a 93-34 verdict.

Girls’ event winners were: Darby Winson (100 hurdles) Janie Crawford (400 meters, triple jump); Tosh Strickland (800 meters); Monica White (300 hurdles); Audrey Rodriguez (3,200 meters); Jane Wallin (shot put, discus).

Boys’ winners were: Jeff White (1,600 meters); Spencer Anderson (110 hurdles); Kevin Tovar (400 meters); Mike Lee (800 meters); Ricky Delatorre (shot put; discus); Kilar Pike (high jump); Joey Gallo (triple jump).

The Breakers host league foe Costa Mesa at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Swimming

The boys’ and girls’ swim teams were victorious Wednesday against Godinez and Calvary Chapel in a Orange Coast League tri-meet at Santa Ana Valley High. The boys’ team defeated Godinez, 54-16, and Calvary Chapel, 123-16, and the girls’ team beat Godinez, 87-75, and Calvary Chapel, 112-4.

Key boys’ highlights: Erik Juliusson (100 free, 49.65 seconds, first); Dane Doran (200 individual medley, 2:13.72, first).

Key girls’ highlights: Yoshi Andersen (100 free, 56.2, first); Makenzie Fischer (100 breaststroke, 1:14.0, second).

In a nonleague road meet March 22, the Laguna boys defeated Mission Viejo, 92-78, while the Laguna girls were edged, 86-81, by the Diablos. Juliusson, a freshman, established a school record in the boys’ 500 freestyle for the second time this season. His time of 4 minutes 52.38 seconds at Mission Viejo broke the previous record time of 4:54.77 he had set in a March 9 meet against San Clemente.

Boys’ Tennis

The Breakers upped their Orange Coast League record to 4-0 on Tuesday after scoring a 16-2 win at Saddleback. Morgan Lebby earned three wins at No. 1 singles and Zach Pratto and Alex Duong won two of three at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. All three Laguna doubles teams, No. 1 Andrew Koumas/Oliver Nassiel, No. 2 Sam Wellsfry/Noah Radach and No. 3 Conner Thomas/Jared Boetes, won in sweeps.

Laguna stepped out of league play to take on Whitney (Cerritos) on Wednesday, losing to the visiting Wildcats, 13-5. Teague Hamilton swept (6-3, 6-1, 6-1) at No. 1 singles for the Breakers.

The Breakers also picked up a 15-3 league win over visiting Costa Mesa on March 22. Hamilton defeated Mesa’s No. 1 Diego Hernandez, 6-0, and Duong, who subbed for Hamilton at No. 1 singles, collected wins against No. 2 Jose Cuevas (6-2) and No. 3 Kevin Nguyen (6-0). At No. 2 singles, Lebby scored a pair of 6-0 wins.

Laguna, ranked No. 4 in this week’s CIF Southern Section Division 4 poll, plays a pair of nonleague matches next week, starting with a 3:15 p.m. match Tuesday against Sage Hill — the top-ranked team in Division 3 — at The Tennis Club. On Thursday, the Breakers travel to face Cerritos.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Breakers, ranked third in CIF Southern Section Division 2, ran their Orange Coast League record to 3-0 on Tuesday by sweeping host Godinez, 25-15, 25-16, 25-17. Jake Hexburg had 10 kills, Maxx McCarter nine kills, JP Wollam had 12 digs, Jack Winn added 19 assists and Grifan Fair chipped in 13 assists in the victory.

The Breakers also scored a 25-15, 25-17, 25-11 league win at Calvary Chapel on March 22. Hexburg came up with 24 digs, Weston Barnes and McCarter had 13 and 11 kills, respectively and Winn and Lucas Capobianco had 18 and 13 assists, respectively.

Laguna travels Wednesday for a 5:45 p.m. nonleague match at Huntington Beach. The Oilers are ranked No. 8 in Division 1.
