Election 2012: Woman’s Club hosts candidates forum
A candidates forum for the 74th Assembly District will take place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at Laguna Beach City Hall, 515 Forest Ave.
The candidates for the newly redrawn district who will be attending are Assemblyman Allan Mansoor (R-Costa Mesa), a former Costa Mesa mayor and O.C. sheriff’s deputy, and Democrat Bob Rush, a Newport Beach resident and activist.
The third candidate in the race, Newport Beach City Councilwoman Leslie Daigle, a Republican, told organizers Tuesday afternoon that she would not be participating.
The forum is sponsored by the American Assn. of University Women, the League of Women Voters of Orange Coast and the Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach. Candidates will have the opportunity to give opening and closing statements, as well as participate in a question-and-answer session.

Chel to host fundraiser at Marine Room
Deputy City Clerk Lisette Chel, who is running for city clerk, is hosting a public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. June 7 at the Marine Room Tavern, 214 Ocean Ave. A donation $25 is suggested.
Chel, a city employee for 29 years, is the only declared candidate for the position. City Clerk Martha Anderson is retiring.
A long-time resident with her husband, Curtis, and daughter, Marlise, Chel has worked in the City Clerk’s office for four years and has received glowing endorsements.
“Lisette Chel has been an asset to our city clerk and no one is better prepared or capable of being the Laguna Beach city clerk for the next four years,” said Mayor Jane Egly.
Councilwoman Toni Iseman said Chel has the skills, the dedication and focus to be a great city clerk.
“She will be a seamless transition,” Iseman said.
“Lisette has my endorsement,” said Mayor Pro Tem and former City Clerk Verna Rollinger. “Lisette Chel is the only person in Laguna Beach I know of who has the credentials and training to be our city clerk. No one is better at customer service.”
Councilwoman Elizabeth Pearson said Chel has shown she can provide the high level of customer service that the community deserves.
“She ‘gets’ Laguna,” Pearson said.

Update on mail-in ballots
City Clerk Martha Anderson advised voters at the May 15 council meeting that Vote by Mail ballots are available through the Secretary of State’s website, https://www.sos.ca.gov. or from the City Clerk’s office.
Registered voters may apply for a vote-by-mail ballot for an upcoming election at any time, according to the website. However, applications by mail must be received no later than seven days prior to the election.
May 29 is the deadline for the June primary. After that, applications must be in person, according to the website.
