Briefly In The News: Welcome back gold medal winner

Join the city of Laguna Beach this weekend in welcoming back local Annika Dries, who helped the U.S. women’s water polo team win a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

The community event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Community Pool, 670 Park Ave. Admission is free, and residents should bring a bathing suit and towel.

Mayor Jane Egly will be on hand to give Dries a proclamation from the City Council in honor of her achievements.

Dries is a former standout of the Laguna Beach High School water polo team. She is currently on the team at Stanford University, which won the 2011 NCAA National Championship.

Trash services delayed for Labor Day

Due to the Labor Day holiday, Waste Management of Orange County’s trash and recycling schedule will be delayed by one day next week, according to a news release.

Customers in Laguna Beach should put their bins out for pickup one day later than usual.

“Customers who usually receive service on Monday will instead receive it Tuesday, and so on throughout the week, with Friday’s customers receiving service on Saturday,” Chrystal Fennel, community relations representative for Waste Management, said in a statement. “We appreciate our customers’ cooperation with the holiday schedule so that our employees can observe Labor Day.”

Apply for housing committee

Applications are being accepted now for the city’s Housing and Human Services Committee, according to a news release from the city.

The eight-member committee has five seats that will be open Oct. 31. The council will interview applicants and make its appointments at its Oct. 2 meeting.

The committee’s purpose is to give input to the City Council on all aspects of housing in Laguna Beach, including affordable housing. Every year the group also reviews the progress of its policies and programs, according to the release. In regards to human services, the committee also focuses on services for senior citizens and the disabled.

The committee meets at 4 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month in Community Center.

Residents interested in one of the open positions should submit an application, which is available at the city clerk’s office or at https://www.lagunabeachcity.net. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Sept. 25.

Nonprofit leaders training starts soon

The Board Chairs Academy will lead a five-part training program for leaders of local nonprofit organizations, according to a news release.

The first half-day session will be held from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Community Center, 380 Third St. It will focus on “The Art of Leading a Nonprofit Organization.”

The sessions will continue on Oct. 26, Dec. 14, Feb. 8 and April 12.

The cost for all five sessions is $325.
