Volleyball tourney this weekend

The 60th annual Men’s Laguna Open Volleyball Tournament is set for Saturday and Sunday at Main Beach in Laguna Beach.

This tournament is a two-day, double-elimination format on six courts and will feature the top 28 teams (entered by ratings points) plus the top four local (Laguna) teams. Check-in is 8:30 a.m. on Main Beach.

The volunteer-run tournament, which includes a prize purse if $5,000, is seeking volunteers. For information, email Tournament Director Kirk Morgan at kirkmorgan@cox.net.

USA team to play in China event

The USA Water Polo Women’s Senior National Team, which includes Makenzie Fischer of Laguna Beach High, arrived in China Monday for the FINA World League Super Final.

The tournament starts Tuesday. In preparation for the tournament, Team USA, coached by Adam Krikorian, also is taking part this week in the Kunshan Cup in the city of Kunshan which started Tuesday.

The 14-player Team USA roster in China (13 players will be selected for the FINA World League Super Final next week): Makenzie Fischer (Laguna Beach High), KK Clark (Menlo Park, UCLA), Kami Craig (Santa Barbara, USC), Rachel Fattal (Seal Beach, UCLA), Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Beach, USC), Ashley Grossman (Santa Monica, Stanford), Sami Hill (Santa Barbara, UCLA), Ashleigh Johnson (Miami, FLA., Princeton), Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, UCLA), Maddie Musselman (Corona del Mar High), Kiley Neushul (Goleta, Stanford), Melissa Seidemann (Walnut Creek, Stanford), Maggie Steffens (Danville, Stanford), Alys Williams (Huntington Beach, UCLA).

Freshmen baseball camp at Laguna

A Youth Baseball Camp for incoming freshmen at Laguna Beach High is scheduled for July 7-23 at the school’s baseball field. The camp will run daily from 5 to 7 p.m.
