High School Roundup: Martinez finishes as a winner
Drake Martinez said just days prior to the Orange County North-South All-Star Football Game at Orange Coast College, that he wanted his final prep performance to end in a win for his South team.
That’s exactly what the 2013 Laguna Beach High graduate and his squad earned on June 28 with a 7-3 victory over the North.
Quarterback Alek Torgersen of Edison High threw a 35-yard touchdown late in the first half of the 54th annual game for senior players at LeBard Stadium. His scoring pass went to wide receiver Scott Hoover of San Juan Hills and it put the South in front to stay, 7-3, with 4:46 left before halftime.
Torgersen was given the Offensive Player of the Game award. South defensive end Garrett Marino of Mission Viejo, and North lineman Izak Faoa of Marina, each of whom had four sacks, shared the Defensive Player of the Game award.
The win was the fifth straight for the South which took the lead in the all-time series, 26-25-3.
Martinez will continue to play at the University of Nebraska.

Girls’ Basketball
The Breakers started their summer season on June 22 at the Estancia tournament. They defeated La Habra, fell to Marina and lost close games to both Mission Viejo and Sunny Hills.
Laguna also is playing in both the Ocean View and Tustin summer leagues. The Breakers have added three incoming freshmen, Madison Sinclair, Rachel Kenney and Nicole Davidson, to their roster. Coach Mark Lewis said both Sinclair and Kenney saw immediate action. Davidson, he said, is recovering from an injury sustained during the club season.
“With injuries, club ball, and other absences, many girls are getting quite a bit of playing experience,” Lewis said. “While we aren’t close to our mid-season form, the experience being gained by some of the girls will be valuable as we look to deepen our rotation after the loss to graduation of our two seniors and the absence of others from last season’s team to pursue other interests.”
Laguna continues summer league play through the end of the month. The Breakers will participate July 18-21 at the San Diego Classic, the nation’s largest girls’ summer league tournament.
The San Diego Classic started in 1987 with just eight teams. This year’s event will draw 168 teams from across the nation.

Boys’ Basketball
Through Wednesday, the Breakers were 13 games into their summer season and are 10-3.
They are playing in both the Dana Hills and Godinez summer leagues. In tournament action, they went 3-1 at the Corona del Mar tournament and this weekend play at the Concordia tournament at Concordia University in Irvine.
“It’s a great group of kids,” Laguna Coach Bret Fleming said. “We’ve got a mix of veterans and young guys with three sophomores playing varsity during the summer.
“[The] kids are working really hard and finding where they fit into the program and defining their roles. Josh Adams and Bryan Ludloff have shown the most improvement, but all the guys are getting better.”
The Breakers’ summer season will come to an end on Aug. 3 when they play host to their annual alumni tournament at Dugger Gym.

Baseball
Laguna starts an eight-game summer schedule Monday at Ocean View. First pitch is 5 p.m.
The Breakers next week also will play Tuesday at Beckman, and play host to Ocean View on July 15.
The schedule runs through the end of the month.
“We play some good teams this summer which will be challenging and hopefully fun as we compete and try to see some of our younger plays step up,” Laguna Coach Mike Bair said. “I hope to find players stepping up into leadership roles and competing for varsity positions.”
