HUNTINGTON BEACH — Dylan Emery had 25 kills to help lead the Pirates to a 26-24, 21-25, 30-28, 18-25, 15-13 Pacific Coast Conference win Friday.

Chris Van Buren and Rusty Sary had 12 kills each, while Michael Ensign had 54 assists and seven digs for OCC (6-4, 3-1 in conference).

“It was a battle,” OCC Coach Travis Turner said.

Golden West is 6-3, 2-1.

OCC plays host to San Diego Friday at 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Claremont Covergence Tournament

POMONA — Hannah Croghan scored seven goals in two wins, helping UC Irvine to a 15-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer and a 19-5 win over Redlands Friday.

Amy Riddering led with four goals against Pomona-Pitzer. Kelsey Klatt had five goals in the two wins and Michaela Pierandozzi finished with six goals for UCI (14-5).

UCI plays host to No. 6 San Diego State (1 p.m.) and Colorado State (7 p.m.) Saturday at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

BASEBALL

BYU 6, UC Irvine 1

IRVINE — Jeff Stephens had two of the Anteaters’ three hits and scored the lone run in the nonconference loss Friday at home.

Taylor Sparks sqeezed in Stephens in the fifth inning for the lone run for UC Irvine (7-6). Andrew Thurman gave up two runs in six innings, striking out four and allowing no walks.

BYU improved to 5-5.

The Anteaters close out the series Saturday at 1 p.m.

Biola 6, Vanguard 1

LA MIRADA — Adonis Tountas and Bryce Arroyo each had two hits for the Lions in the Golden State Athlete Conference game Friday at Biola.

Vanguard fell to 8-8, 0-6 in conference. Catcher Mike Lopez was three for four with two RBIs for No. 10 Biola (11-12, 5-5).

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Vanguard split the two nonconference games Friday, defeating Holy Names, 3-0, in the first game before falling in the nightcap, 2-1.

Designated hitter Breanne Gomez was two for three in the opener, driving in all three runs for the Lions (15-10). Brittany Colenzo pitched seven innings for the shutout, allowing just two hits.

Kari Bergerson was three for three with a run scored in the second game for the Lions.

Holy Names is 14-10.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Long Beach State 5, UC Irvine 2

LONG BEACH — Kat Facey won at No. 4 singles for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Friday.

Stephanie Hammel won at No. 5 singles for UCI (8-5, 2-1 in conference).

Long Beach State is 10-3, 5-0.

UCI plays at Cal State Fulleton Tuesday at 2 p.m.
