BRASILIA, Brazil — It was just like old times in the gold medal match of the beach volleyball Brasilia Open.

Newport Harbor High alumna Misty May-Treanor has reunited with her old partner, Kerri Walsh. They came close to winning yet another title Friday on the FIVB World Tour.

Playing together in a tournament for the first time in more than two years, seventh-seeded May-Treanor and Walsh were edged by the top seeds from Brazil, Juliana Felbersta Silva and Larissa Franca, 21-16, 15-21, 15-12, in the final Friday.

Eighth-seeded Newport Harbor alumna April Ross and her partner, Jen Kessy, beat fellow Americans Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Hanson, 25-23, 21-19, in the third-place match.

It was the first tournament for May-Treanor and Walsh since they won their second straight Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. May-Treanor, 33, had been playing with Nicole Branaugh on the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Tour last summer before the season was cut short in August.

It was the 15th time that May-Treanor and Walsh had met their Brazilian rivals, who have won five of the last six international season championships. May-Treanor and Walsh still hold an 11-4 edge in the series.

The third set was tied at 12-12 before the Brazilians won the last three points.

May-Treanor and Walsh shared a $21,000 second-place prize. They have finished in the final four of 55 of their 60 FIVB events.

Ross and Kessy, the reigning FIVB World Champions, split $15,000 as the third-place team.
