Briefs: Breakers win in Sacramento

The Orange County Breakers moved into a first-place tie in World Team Tennis’ Western Conference after beating the Sacramento Capitals, 19-16, on the road Tuesday night.

The Breakers’ John-Patrick Smith clinched the match when he defeated Kevin Anderson, 5-3, in men’s singles.

The Breakers earlier gained set victories from Smith and Lindsay Davenport in mixed doubles (5-1) as well as Davenport and Jana Juricova in women’s doubles (5-2).

Orange County and Sacramento are tied atop the conference at 5-6, with three matches left to play.

The teams meet again Wednesday night at 7 at UC Irvine’s Bren Events Center. It will be Billie Jean King night.

CdM alumni tourney coming Saturday

The 24th annual Corona del Mar High alumni basketball tournament (the Jack Errion Memorial Tournament) will take place Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at CdM.

Graduating classes from as far back as 1980, up to the most recent class of 2012, will be competing this year, including the defending champion class of 1990.

Altogether, 16 teams and approximately 150 players and their families are expected.

As always, the tournament is a fund-raiser for the boys’ basketball program, and a silent auction will be held to raise funds.

Newport alumni tourney Saturday

The Newport Harbor High alumni basketball tournament will take place at the high school on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m.

The tournament will feature five-on-five, full-court action, referees and scorekeepers. Games will be 20 minutes with a running clock, and the tournament is open to all Newport Harbor alumni, whether or not they played on the basketball team.

Registration, which includes a commemorative T-shirt, is $25 per player. Teams may be pre-formed, or players may show up Saturday and be placed on a team.
