Gold medalists Misty May-Treanor, a women’s beach volleyball player, and Kyla Ross, a women’s gymnast, highlight two of five U.S. Olympic athletes from the recent London Games with Costa Mesa ties that the city of Costa Mesa will honor in a City Hall ceremony on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The other three athletes are April Ross, a silver medalist in women’s beach volleyball, Jake Gibb, a men’s beach volleyball player, and Sharon Day, a heptathlete in women’s track and field.

Each athlete will receive a Costa Mesa street sign in their name and gifts.

“Costa Mesa is proud to have had five of the world’s best athletes to the London Games,” city chief executive officer Tom Hatch said in a press release. “This is our way of celebrating their success and letting them know how much their hometown is behind them.”

Hatch will emcee the event on the City Hall lawn.

The event is open to the public and it will start before the City Council meeting. Free parking is available at the Orange County Fair and Event Center’s Lot B.

May-Treanor, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, and April Ross both grew up in Costa Mesa and attended Newport Harbor High. They each led their respective girls’ volleyball teams to CIF Southern Section championships.

Day, who’s from Costa Mesa, graduated from Costa Mesa High, where she was a CIF track and field standout.

Gibb lives in Costa Mesa, while Ross trains at the Gym-Max Academy of Gymnastics in Costa Mesa.
