Community & Clubs: Rotarians from Japan to tour Newport Beach

On Wednesday night,16 members of the Rotary Club of Okazaki South, from Newport Beach’s sister city in Japan, will attend the Newport-Balboa meeting at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, Corona del Mar.

Also attending will be Newport Beach Mayor Michael Henn and other community dignitaries, including 10 representatives of the Newport Beach Sister City Assn. and representatives from District 5320.

On Thursday, the Okazaki Rotarians will visit the Newport Beach Central Library, where Newport Beach Sunrise President Cynthia Cowell will take them on a tour as the library’s director of library services. The Japanese delegation will also be taken on a tour of the future Civic Center site by Public Works Director Stephen Badum.

At 10:30 a.m. Thursday, the two Rotary clubs will dedicate a third bench at the Newport Beach-Okazaki Japan Garden in the southwest corner of Irvine Terrace Park. The bench will be in memory of Okazaki’s Masao Kato, who passed away in May.

Completing the morning will be a visit to the Environmental Nature Center and its Butterfly House, followed by a private farewell luncheon for the delegation at A’Maree’s.

Cleaning up

On Sept. 17, the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa served lunch to some 1,000 volunteers who spent the day taking part in the Cleaning the Upper Bay program. A special thank you went from club President Bill Hossfeld to the Newport Beach Fire Department for helping at the Muth Interpretive Center, and this year’s joint event chairs, John Kerr and A.J. Thielen.

Lions reach out

The Harbor Mesa Lions donated school supply boxes filled with items requested by the teachers, such as pencils, erasers, rulers, glue, scissors, etc., to first-graders at Whittier and Rea elementary schools during their first week in session. Twenty members participated in the assembling and distribution of more than 200 boxes.
