College Roundup: Pirates fall to Rustlers

Share

COSTA MESA — The rowdy crowd inside the Peterson Gym wasn’t enough to carry the Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team over the hump on Wednesday night. Golden West spread the offense around and won the Orange Empire Conference title with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-23 win over the host Pirates.

Alyssa Hubbard led the Rustlers (19-3, 13-1 in conference) with 12 kills, while Bethanee Boggs added 10 and Alicia Utke chipped in nine.

For the Pirates (18-2, 12-2), Karlee Riggs led the way with 21 kills and six digs, but no other hitter was a factor in the offense. Setter Allison Lumsden was the next-highest kill producer with five to go along with 30 assists and seven digs.

On defense, Andi Frisina had 12 digs, while Dana Nicholson added eight for Coast.

Jade Gray dished out 33 assists and had nine digs for GWC, while Talia DeFalco led the defense with 10 digs.

The Rustlers used a 5-0 run to take away a 17-16 OCC advantage and give GWC the lead for good in front of a standing-room-only crowd inside the Peterson Gym. An ace by Utke, a block by Kami Dickerson and three errant plays by the Pirates highlighted the run.

After a Pirate timeout, a Riggs kill, a long Rustler return and an ace by Frisina trimmed the deficit down to one at 21-20, but the Rustlers responded with a 4-1 run to close the opening set out.

The second set was a carbon copy of the first set as a 17-17 tie quickly turning to a 22-17 Rustler advantage, thanks to a pair of kills by Boggs and single putaways by Saelina Dunn and Dickerson.

With the help of a 4-1 run, OCC tried to claw back into the set at 23-21, but a wide serve set up set point for the Rustlers and a kill by Utke gave GWC a two-set lead in the match.

The third set went back and forth with a combined 13 different lead changes. No team had any lead larger than two points throughout the set.

Despite a seven-kill performance by Riggs in the third set, it wasn’t enough as a 6-3 run by Golden West was enough to close out the match and win the Orange Empire Conference title.

The Southern California Regional Playoffs will begin on Tuesday at sites and times to be announced. The seedings will be announced this weekend.
