Daniel James Vanian, 81, of Newport Beach, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014. Born on July 28, 1932 in Pasadena to Roxie and Albert Vanian, he graduated from Westmont College in 1956 and received his PhD from the University of Southern California in 1972.

Dan was a professor at Cal State Los Angeles and Westmont College and worked as a psychologist for 23 years. Dan loved spending time with family and friends, watching college football, and reading and listening to scripture. Although he faced numerous challenges with health and disability, Dan’s faith and joyful spirit were an inspiration to everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his daughters, Lisa Wolff, Heather Vanian, and Tracy Vanian; son-in-law, Andrew Wolff; granddaughter, Roxie Wolff; and a large extended family. Dan was married to Carol Marie Vanian for 40 years until her death in 2008.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 9, 2014 at Mariner’s Church in Irvine. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to World Vision or Armenian Gospel Mission.
