Murray Fowler

Sports car enthusiast and BMW Coupe owner Murray Fowler passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2013 in Costa Mesa, Calif.
Murray will be missed by his family, friends and fellow BMW enthusiasts.
Murray was a passionate member of the BMW Car Club of America and the local classic BMW community. He was a frequent visitor at local car shows, Cars and Coffee and the driving events sponsored by the So. Cal Vintage BMW group.
Known as a spirited driver, many club members have been very surprised to be passed on the open highway by this senior citizen while driving his “Blue Max”– a 1970 BMW 2800 CS Coupe that Murray purchased 41 years ago.
Murray is survived by his wife Beatriz Carillo, sons David and Jeffrey and daughter Melissa. Born on January 29th 1929 in Mexico, Missouri, he grew up in Bowling Green, Missouri. He attended University of Missouri graduating with a B.S. in Business in 1950. Murray entered the Navy in 1951 serving in Korea, then entering the U.S. Naval reserves in 1954. Murray had a broad career starting at Chrysler in Detroit working in advertising and special products, then in New Jersey working in the Life Insurance business. Murray moved to Newport Beach in 1968, continuing in the Insurance business. He retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Captain in 1987 while continuing his career in venture capital.
Murray purchased his “Blue Max’’ in 1972, logging over 420,000 miles over the next four decades. The “Blue Max” is the highest mileage / single owner BMW CS Coupe in the world.
Up until his final hours, Murray remained very active on a number of the BMW Internet forums, providing sage advice and enthusiastic support to BMW owners all over the world.
His contagious enthusiasm for life and for all things BMW made him highly regarded in a global community of car enthusiasts. Murray’s “E9” friends all hope to be half as passionate about life as Murray has shown them in driving through life with his Blue Max. He will be missed. Godspeed Murray Fowler.
