Forty-six members of the 99-student Circle K Club of Orange Coast College attended the 60th annual convention of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Circle K International in Burbank from March 21 to 23.
They joined 750 students from colleges and universities in the three states to celebrate accomplishments, learn new leadership skills and meet old friends and make new ones.
The Circle K Club, part of the Kiwanis International Service Leadership Program, is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa.
OCC's group was designated a Distinguished Club for performing more than 8,700 hours of service at the college and in the community, providing significant leadership opportunities for its members and having a substantial program of social activities and fellowship.
In a clean sweep of executive officers, Chad Vo (Westminster) was named Distinguished President, Omar Sanchez (Huntington Beach) was named Distinguished Vice President of Administration, Michael Pham (Westminster) was named Distinguished Vice President of Service, Kelley Ha (Westminster) was named Distinguished Secretary and was recognized for 100% on-time monthly reports, and Christina Nguyen (Garden Grove) was named Distinguished Treasurer.
Elizabeth Huynh (Westminster) chaired the Scrapbook Committee and with the leadership of Sandy Pham (Garden Grove), Noriko Yoshida (Costa Mesa) and Lam "Terry" Cao (Westminster) and the help of two subcommittees developed award-winning entries, in traditional and non-traditional (diorama-based) categories.
Pham and Yoshida were also recognized for their entry in the Service Showcase, an exposition of the Kelly's Closet "Clothe the Children" project, which is jointly planned each year by representatives of Circle K, Kiwanis, Key Clubs and Builders Club in Costa Mesa.
Billy Le (Garden Grove), the Kiwanis Family chair, earned the Distinguished Kiwanis Family Award for his excellent program to link Kiwanis Family clubs throughout Orange County in service and social activities.
Monique Thai (Westminster), Membership Development and Education (MDE) chair, Hoang To (Midway City), Membership Recognition and Awards chair and their committee earned top honors with the Distinguished MDE Award for their program of recruitment, education and recognition. They also developed a family system, which creates mini clubs to ensure that all members have a positive social experience.
Nicholas Bennett (Costa Mesa), Social chair, and Michael Chantos (Costa Mesa), Spirit chair, ensured the well-being of members through social aspects required for distinguished-club status.
The other club members who received recognition are too many to list! Congratulations to one and all.

Karen Treaccar of the Assistance League of Newport-Mesa will be honored at the Spirit of Volunteerism Awards Luncheon on Wednesday at the Disneyland Hotel as an outstanding community volunteer by OneOC.
In the nomination submitted by the Assistance League, Treaccar was noted "for being an intelligent, caring, hard-working and creative volunteer in our organization. She is a past president and has held many leadership positions the 12 years that she has been a member, including her current position as the VP of our thrift shop.
