Community & Clubs: Reading this in print? Thank the pioneers
Each school year, the Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club underwrites Ben Franklin and his Museum on Wheels to visit several schools around Newport Beach. This creative educational outreach, a program of the International Printing Museum in Carson, makes history and learning come to life for students of all ages, according to John Hedlund, club project coordinator and former printer.
Club members attend the presentations. The assembly programs last for just under two hours, starting with one hour at the mobile history exhibit outside, where the Printing Museum curator explores the world of books and printing from before Gutenberg to the time of Franklin.
During the second hour, the students meet Franklin in their auditorium as he details his life and inventions and discoveries. Both presentations are very lively, entertaining and informative for all ages.
Schools being visited this spring include Andersen, Lincoln, Mariners and Harbor View elementaries.

‘Field of Honor’ in May
A display of 1776 U.S. flags can be seen from May 16 to 19 at Mariners Park, which overlooks Dover Drive and Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, according to Dick Freeman, a member of the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor, which sponsors the event.
A formal presentation May 17 will feature Rear Adm. Richard Lyon, a Navy SEAL, speaking at 12:30 p.m., and the public is invited.
This really great event will feature “flyovers,” bands and special flag groups.
Have a family member or friend who served in the military? You can purchase a flag, which will be dedicated to that individual and on display at the Field of Honor, and take it home after the event.

One voice, united in prayer
The Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council’s 16th annual National Day of Prayer Breakfast will be held at 7 a.m. May 1 at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Two great interfaith speakers, Maria Khani of the Islamic Institute of Orange County and Rabbi Michael Mayersohn, will speak on “The Power of Two Prayers.”
The breakfast program will include honored representatives from our interfaith religious communities, including Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and Baha’i, and local government. Doors open at 6:40 a.m., with breakfast at 7:10 a.m. and adjournment by 8:45 a.m. Our Lady Queen of Angels is at 2046 Mar Vista Drive, Newport Beach. Breakfast will be in Parish Hall, in the original buildings.
The National Day of Prayer is an annual event established by Congress to encourage Americans to pray for the nation, its people and their leaders.
