Newport looking for police officer candidates
The city of Newport Beach is seeking police officers to replace those expected to retire in the next few years.
The city will accept applications for entry-level and academy-graduate police officers until 5 p.m. Oct. 22 or until the department receives 500 qualified applicants, said police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.
Entry-level applicants must successfully complete a California POST Basic Academy and the city’s police field training program. Academy-graduate applicants must possess a current POST academy certificate and successfully complete the department’s field training program, according to a news release.
The entire process takes about 18 months, Manzella said.
“It’s a long process and we’re being forward-thinking,” she said. “We know in the next year and a half or so, we’re going to have more retirements because people are coming to retirement age.”
The city is also accepting applications for lateral police officers — those who are certified and have successfully completed the probationary period and training program at another law enforcement agency.
The Newport Beach Police Department is funded for 106 police officers. Manzella could not disclose the number of officers currently employed.
