Costa Mesa cyclist hit Monday

A 44-year-old Costa Mesa resident suffered major injuries after being run over and trapped under a car while bicycling on Newport Boulevard early Monday morning, authorities said.

A Costa Mesa man, 48, was driving eastbound on Bay Street toward Newport Boulevard shortly before 5 a.m. The driver turned right onto Newport Boulevard when he heard a loud noise. He stopped the vehicle and discovered that Michelle Lounsbury was trapped underneath his car, according to a news release.

Fire officials used emergency equipment to lift the car and rescue Lounsbury, who was transported by ambulance to the Intensive Care Unit at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. She is being treated for a broken right arm, facial and chest trauma.

Updated, 10:52 a.m.: Security footage indicates that there were people present when Lounsbury was run over, authorities said.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Traffic Investigator Darren Wood at (714) 754-5264.

No citations have been issued to the driver.
