The officer apparently was the only person in the vehicle, which crashed near the intersection of Newport Boulevard and Bristol Street about 10:15 p.m., the television station said. He was taken to Santa Ana’s Western Medical Center, where he died in surgery.

Authorities have not released the officer’s name or age, but said he had been on the force for about 30 years.
