Rollo W. McClellan Jr., December 21, 1919- May 4, 2013
Resident of Newport Beach, California.
Rollo McClellan passed away Saturday, May 4 2013 at the age of 93 in Walnut Creek California. He had recently moved to the Bay Area to be near his children Mike and Kerry and their families five months earlier. Until that time he lived his entire life in Orange County. Rollo was born December 21, 1919 in Anaheim on the family farm on Ball Road. His parents, RW McClellan Sr. and Blanche McClellan, moved to Costa Mesa in 1926, with their four children, Ellen, Virginia, Rollo Jr. and Sparks. McClellan construction enterprises participated in the early development of Newport and Costa Mesa through their Sand and Gravel, Dredging and site development activities.
Rollo Jr attended Maine School in Costa Mesa, and Newport Harbor High School (Class of ’38) where he excelled in track and field and football. He went on to attend Fullerton Jr. College and served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre in World War II.
Rollo Jr and Betty Perkins were married in June of 1940 in Anaheim. After the war he joined the family business, RW McClellan and Sons, and purchased a family home in Newport Beach. The family moved to Mesa Drive on the Back Bay, in 1949. Rollo was an active member of the Newport –Mesa Lyons Club for over 65 years, and one of the founding members of the Costa Mesa Fish Fry.
In 1956 he was elected to the Newport Mesa School Board and served 2 terms. In addition to Real Estate Development he was an active member of the community throughout his life.
He was an active sailor and at a drop of the hat you would be on the Bay for a sail on his boat “Whisper”. He loved the outdoors and spent great times with his family on camping trips. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
Rollo will be remembered by his love of life, and his dedication to his Family and Friends. Rollo is preceded in death by his wife Betty of 64 years. He is survived by his brother Sparks, his son Mike (Marta) and Daughter Kerry (Jeff), Grandchildren Stacey, Jeffrey (Rhonda), Katie (Chad), Paige (Rick), Meghan, Matthew, Brooke, and Justin. Great Grandchildren Cooper, Nate, Lizzy, Tanner, Luke, Mac, Owen Rollo, Taylor, Miles.
He will be greatly missed.
Services will be held Saturday May 18th at 2pm at Pacific View Memorial Park, 3500 Pacific View, Corona Del Mar, CA
