College Roundup: OCC men grab first conference win

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 95, Fullerton 89

Devaun Evans had 24 points and Brad Buchignani added 19 to propel the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Evans was 14 of 19 from the foul line, and produced a team-best nine rebounds as the Pirates (7-15, 1-4 in conference) made 31 free throws, 11 more than the Hornets (5-15, 1-4), to overcome a 53-33 rebounding deficit.

Spencer Poston (15 points) and Jonah Ganz (12) also chipped in for the winners.

OCC shot 40.3% from the field, while Fullerton was 32 for 70 from the field (45.7%).

OCC forced 19 turnovers, five more than it committed.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 78, Fullerton 66

Sophomore guard Dayanara Armenta shot 50% from the field on her way to a team-high 20 points to lead the visiting Pirates to their second straight Orange Empire Conference win on Friday.

Armenta sank eight of 16 field-goal attempts, including a pair of three-pointers, while sophomore Raechelle Davis had 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Freshman Jasmine Matar had 19 points and is averaging a little more then 20 per game in the last three contests, while adding seven steals.

OCC sophomore Chanelle DiCroce had eight rebounds and seven points for the winners (12-9, 3-2 in conference).

OCC posted a 42-29 rebounding advantage.

Fullerton fell to 5-15, 1-4.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

TCU 4, UC Irvine 0

LOS ANGELES — The No. 1 doubles team of Ali Facey and Franziska Goettsching dropped a 7-6 tiebreaker as the Anteaters opened their season in the ITA Kickoff Classic on Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Goettsching was the lone UCI singles player to win a set in the No. 2 spot.

UCI will face San Diego on Saturday at 6 p.m.
