College Roundup: VU women complete perfect regular season

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 82, San Diego Christian 59

Senior guard Taylor Belmont came close to producing a triple-double at home, finishing with 14 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, as the top-ranked Lions closed out the regular season perfect on Saturday.

Vanguard improved to 25-0 overall and 14-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The Lions finished undefeated in conference play for the fourth time under Coach Russ Davis.

Vanguard’s Nicole Ballestero had 22 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.

Melissa Norman had 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while Jordie Smith contributed 12 points.

The Lions forced 17 turnovers, leading to 19 points. The Lions outscored San Diego Christian (11-16, 2-12 in conference) by 20 points in the paint.

Vanguard opens the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday at home as the top seed. The Lions face No. 8 Arizona Christian at 7:30 p.m.

Cal Poly 92, UC Irvine 87 (OT)

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Senior Camille Buckley had her 15th double-double of the season and senior Kelly Meggs scored a career-high 22 points to help the visiting Anteaters push the Big West Conference-leading Mustangs into overtime on Saturday.

Buckley had 22 points and 12 rebounds and made eight of 11 field-goal attempts.

Meggs was seven for 13 from the field, including five of 10 from three-point range. She also had a team-best five assists and added two steals.

Vanessa Aguilar came off the bench to add 14 points, while fellow senior Lauren Spinazze had 12 points. Aguilar made all seven of her foul shots, but UCI (14-14, 7-7 in conference) was 25 for 36 from the line.

Cal Poly (16-12, 10-5) made 25 of 29 free-throw tries and won the rebounding battle, 61-43.

Mustangs’ star forward Molly Schlemer made her second three-pointer of the season with 9.6 seconds left to force overtime.

Orange Coast 61, Cuesta 58

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Sophomore Chanelle DiCroce had 13 rebounds and 10 points, freshman Jasmine Matar added 18 points and five rebounds and two other Pirates scored in double figures to help the No. 9-seeded visitors prevail over the No. 8-ranked Cougars in the first round of the Southern California Regional playoffs on Friday.

OCC (19-10) will likely meet No. 1-seeded Ventura at Ventura on Wednesday, should Ventura avoid an upset by Santa Ana on Saturday night.

Kelsey Dalton had 14 points and Dayanara Armenta added 13 for OCC, for which Matar made seven of 11 field-goal attempts.

Cuesta finished 22-8.

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 5, Portland 3

PORTLAND, Ore. — Senior starting pitcher Evan Brock improved to 3-0 and sophomore Grant Palmer drove in two runs to help the visiting Anteaters complete a three-game sweep of the nonconference series that concluded Saturday.

Brock allowed nine hits and three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. Jimmy Litchfield followed with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief and Sam Moore got the final out for his fifth save of the season.

UCI (8-3) has won five in a row and has a team earned-run average of 1.36 through 106 innings this season.

Mikey Duarte had three hits for the winners, while Kris Paulino, Chris Rabago and Taylor Sparks all had two.

Connor Spencer and Jerry McClanahan also drove in runs for the ‘Eaters, who play host to USC on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 13, UC San Diego 7

The No. 6-ranked Anteaters outscored the Tritons, 5-0, in the fourth quarter of the nonconference match Saturday.

Hannah Croghan had three goals, while UCI teammates Danielle Warde, Destene Albers and Hillary Estrada had two apiece.

UCI is 12-6 and UCSD is 11-7.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships

SEATTLE — Itos Aikhionbare and Megan George led UC Irvine on Saturday.

Aikhionbare finished fourth in the shot put with a personal indoor-best mark of 50-3 1/4.

George placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.65 seconds.

Chelsea Schneider finished 12th among 26 runners in the 800 in 2:14.90 and Ericka Nowell was 29th in the 400 in 56.80.

Lauren Ellison finished 15th in the triple jump with a mark of 36-3 and Rebecka Miranda was 16th at 36-2 3/4.

UCI finished 14th in the team standings with eight points.

The Anteaters open the 2014 outdoor schedule Saturday in the All-UC Meet at La Jolla.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 93, San Diego Christian 81

Preston Wynne scored 23 points and Chris Gorman added 21 points for the No. 10-ranked Lions in the Golden State Atheltic Conference game Saturday in the Pit.

DeAngelo Jones finished with 14 points and Keith Mason scored 11 points for Vanguard (24-6, 11-3 in conference).
