Harrington, Kapana, O’Beck on first team

Newport Harbor High’s talented goalie tandem of senior Cleo Harrington and junior Carlee Kapana, as well as Sailors senior Christina O’Beck, have all earned first-team all-Sunset League honors in girls’ water polo.

Kapana (173 saves) and the Harvard-bound Harrington (166) split time for the Sailors, with Harrington playing the first half and Kapana playing the second half. They helped Newport Harbor (23-8, 4-1 in league) finish second in league to Los Alamitos. Then as, the No. 7 seed, the Sailors upset No. 3 Foothill and No. 6 Santa Barbara to return to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title match for the third straight year, where they fell to Laguna Beach.

O’Beck, a center, led the Sailors with 66 goals. She also had 16 steals.

University of Hawaii-bound Newport Harbor senior Heidi Fults, as well as junior defender Rachel Whitelegge, earned second-team All-Sunset League status.

Los Alamitos senior Ella Weber. bound for San Diego State, was the Sunset League Player of the Year. She helped the Griffins upset the Sailors and capture their first league title in three seasons, in Coach Dave Carlson’s final year.
