High School Roundup: Estancia grabs share of league title

The Estancia High boys’ golf team captured a share of the Orange Coast League championship after defeating Calvary Chapel, 208-225, at Mesa Verde Country Club Thursday.

Estancia shared the title with Calvary Chapel.

Freshman Kobi Uta shot the low for Estancia, finishing at four-over-par 40. Parker Ohland (41), Gunnar Johnston (42), Davin Ortiz (42) and Brad Ehrhorn (43) also scored for Estancia (11-8, 7-2 in league).

Estancia next plays in the OCL individual finals Monday at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.

SOFTBALL

Estancia 10, Costa Mesa 0

Kelly Hinkle excelled on offense and defense to lead the Eagles to the mercy-rule, Orange Coast League win Thursday.

She recored eight strikeouts and allowed two hits in the circle and went three for three at the plate.

Maya Van Den Heever was three for four and scored the Eagles’ final run.

BOYS’ GOLF

Corona del Mar 173, Northwood 184

Karick Brown finished as the medalist with a three-under-par 32 to lead the Sea Kings to the win in the Pacific Coast League finale Thursday at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.

Chase Furey (33), Ian Fletcher (34), Drew Hanson (37) and Hale Furey (37) also scored for CdM (16-4, 7-3 in league), which qualified for the CIF playoffs.

The Sea Kings will next compete in the two-day PCL finals that begin Tuesday at San Juan Hills Golf Club in San Juan Capistrano.

Corona del Mar 194, Irvine 238

IRVINE — Ian Fletcher was medalist for CdM, firing a one-over par 36 in Wednesday’s Pacific Coast League match at Oak Creek Golf Club.

Hale Furey (37), Chase Furey (38), Drew Hanson (41) and Garrett Wayne (42) also scored for the Sea Kings (15-4, 6-3 in league).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 16, Northwood 4

Payton Carter scored five goals for the Sea Kings, who finished as co-champions of the Pacific Coast League Thursday.

Paige Nelson (three goals) Kennedy Mulvaney (three), Kennedy McGuiness (two), Jaime Smith (two), Kendall Mulvaney (one) and Amy Martino (one) also scored for CdM (9-1 in league).

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 7, Huntington Beach 2

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sophomore Jason Simaan won 11 of 12 faceoffs on the road Wednesday for the Sea Kings, ranked No. 10 in the state by LaxPower.com.

Sherwin Gersten recorded five goals and two groundballs for CdM (13-1), while Stephen Von Der Ahe and Jack Denning each had a goal.

Goalie Hoyt Crance finished with four saves and Chad Redfearn had three forced turnovers.

The Sea Kings canceled their regular-season finale against Coronado, which was slated for Friday and will aways playoff seedings that will be determined Saturday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Los Alamitos 10, Newport Harbor 8

LOS ALAMITOS — Sean Perrier and Garrett Byers won two of three in doubles to improve to 41-9 this season after the Sunset League match Thursday.

David Schaefer and Phillip Vu won two of three at No. 2 doubles and Garrett Hall and Peirce Ward won one at No. 3 doubles for Newport Harbor (13-5, 5-4 in league).

The Sailors play their final league match against Marina at home on Monday.

Newport Harbor 14, Laguna Beach 4

Sailors junior Reese Stalder won two 6-0 sets before being subbed out, improving to 35-0 this season in the Sailors’ nonleague match Wednesday.

The doubles teams of Sean Perrier and Garrett Byers, as well as Phillip Vu and David Schroeder, plus Garrett Hall and Peirce Ward, all won twice before they also were subbed out.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Corona del Mar 63.5, Northwood 63.5

Matt Hurst, who was on two victorious relays, and Spencer Keith won two individual each in the Pacific Coast League meet Wednesday.

Hurst won the 200 meters in 22.1 seconds and the 400 in 51.6. He was also on the winning 4x100 relay with Sutton Barbato, Barrett Barbato and Danny Giger that finished in 44.6, and the first-place 4x400 relay team of Austin Baxter, Alex Wilde and Ethan Hold that finished in 3:31.9.

Keith won the 1,600 in 4:31 and the 3,200 in 10:20.9.

Alex Wilde (6 feet, four inches in high jump), Michael Pierotti (123-9 in discus) and Giovanni Gentosi (45-4 1/2 in the shotput) also won for CdM.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Northwood 69, Corona del Mar 57

Emma Kratzberg took first in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and was on a winning relay team for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Wednesday.

Kratzberg won the 100 hurdles in 15 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 42.4, and she was on the winning 4x400 relay team (4:19.8) that also included Erika Anderson, Elin Wolker and Emily Glenn.

Asha Hardy (5-2 in the high jump), Amanda Cooper (105-5 in the discus), Maria King (33-3 in the shotput) also won for CdM.
