High School Roundup: Vetrovec pitches shutout against Los Al

Senior Shaun Vetrovec, bound for UC Irvine, pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and three walks to improve to 6-3 after the big Sunset League win Friday.

Rigsby Duncan doubled with two outs in the fourth inning to score Luke Genova and Tk McWhertor.

Connor Seabold was two for four, Genova went two for four with an RBI and McWhertor was one for two with an RBI and a run for Newport Harbor (11-13, 4-9 in league), which finished with 10 hits.

Seabold, bound for Cal State Fullerton, starts for the Sailors against Marina Tuesday at Newport Harbor, senior day, Coach Evan Chalmers said.

The Tars must win their final two regular-season games against the Vikings to earn a CIF playoff berth.

Corona del Mar 8, Northwood 5

IRVINE — Baron Schwarz went two for three with a three-run home run and four runs batted in for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Friday.

Brett Olson earned the pitching win, and at the plate went three for five with two RBIs and a double. Wyatt Zalewski had three hits and an RBI and Nolan McCarty had two hits for CdM, which plays at Irvine on Tuesday.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Orange Coast League finals

LAGUNA BEACH — Costa Mesa High senior Quinton Bell won two events and also anchored two victiorious relays Thursday at Laguna Beach High.

Bell won the 100 meters in 11.19 seconds and set a new league meet record in the 200, finishing in 21.82.

The winning 4x100 relay team also featured Jamil Douglas, Xavier Bell and Michael Dias and finished in 44.67.

The triumphant 4x400 relay team also included Brett Bermudez, Anuare Magna and John Hernandez and won in a league meet record time of 3 minutes, 29.62 seconds.

Bermudez also won the 1,600 in 4:27.2 and the 3,2000 in 9:55.8.

They qualified to compete in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries May 17 at Jim Scott Stadium.

The Costa Mesa boys finished third as a team with 104 points. Laguna Beach won with 142 points and Godinez was second with 118. Estancia was fifth with 20 points.

Orange Coast League finals

LAGUNA BEACH — Estancia High junior Luigi Gonzalez won a league title in the discus (123 feet, 1 1/2 inches) Thursday at Laguna Beach High.

Eagles junior Tyler Thomas finished second in the shotput (44-4).

Both advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Orange Coast League finals

LAGUNA BEACH — Estancia High senior Persis Williams-Mensah won the 100 and 200 meters for the fourth straight time Thursday at Laguna Beach High.

Williams-Mensah, bound for UC Irvine, completed her four years in the OCL undefated in both races. She won the 100 in 12.63 and the 200 in 25.95.

Senior Rebekah Lewis won the discus (116-5) for the second straight year and was second in the shotput (34-7).

They advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries.

Estancia finished fourth as a team with 48 points. Laguna Beach won with 208 and Costas Mesa was fifth with 36.

Orange Coast League finals

LAGUNA BEACH — Costa Mesa High sophomore Paige LaBare finished second in the 100 (13.04) and 200 (26.75) Thursday at Laguna Beach High.

LaBare advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Orange Coast League finals

Tyler Connors won two events for Costa Mesa High on Thursday at the Mustangs’ pool, as Costa Mesa finished in third place.

Connors captured both the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.89) and the 100 backstroke (55.28 seconds).

The 200 freestyle relay placed second (1:33.86) and the 400 free relay finished Third (3:29.89). Andrew Palacious, Jacob Petersen, Raymond Andrade, and Tyler Connors swam on both relays.

The Mustangs next swim at the CIF Southern Section Division 3 meet. Preliminaries are Wednesday at Riverside City College, with finals on Thursday.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Orange Coast League finals

Lauren Smith placed second in the 200-yard freestyle as Costa Mesa High finished fifth in league at its home pool Thursday.

Smith finished in 2:07.76. Bridgette Smitheram won the consolation final in the 100 free, in 1:02.21.

Both the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.65) and 400 free relay (4:11.10) placed second. Devon Christensen, Yesennia Villa, Smitheram and Smith swam on both relays.

The Mustangs next swim at the CIF Southern Section Division 3 meet. Preliminaries are Wednesday at Riverside City College, with finals on Thursday.
