College Roundup: Vanguard baseball opens with 4-1 win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Senior Sean Isaac threw a complete-game three-hitter and Brandon Sandoval was three for five with two runs and one run batted in to pace the Lions in the first game of the five-team NAIA Opening Round Tournament at Faulkner University.

Isaac, who came in sharing the NAIA lead with 13 wins, improved to 14-2, using 116 pitches to post his first complete game of the season. He struck out six and walked five.

Senior shortstop Jose Rojas had a pair of sacrifice flies and junior right fielder Brock Eissman hit a solo home run in the first inning to help fuel the No. 13-ranked Lions (38-13-1).

Vanguard plays Wednesday at 5 p.m. PT against the winner of Tuesday’s late game between No. 3-ranked Faulkner (46-12) and Central Methodist of Missouri (44-15).

Texas Wesleyan is 39-18.

Cal Poly SLO 17, UC Irvine 5

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The first five pitchers all allowed at least two earned runs for the visiting Anteaters in the rubber game of the Big West Conference series on Sunday.

Adam Alcantara and Cole Kreuter both had two hits to lead UCI’s 10-hit attack.

UCI fell to 28-21, 8-10 in conference and is tied for seventh in the nine-team Big West.]

Cal Poly improved to 28-22, 9-9.

State championship

RANCHO MIRAGE — Conor Hurst tied for 10th to help Orange Coast College finish fourth in the California Community College Athletic Assn. Championship on Monday at Desert Island Golf & Country Club.

Hurst shot seven-over-par 151 over 36 holes as OCC posted a team score of 765, 20 shots behind victorious Reedley.

Austin Briggs (19th at 153), Justin Collins and Jeremy Dorff (tied for 20th at 154) and Marcus De La Rosa (tied for 34th at 157) scored for the Pirates.
