Briefs: UCI’s Alcantara lauded

UC Irvine junior Adam Alcantara was named Big West Conference Player of the Week in baseball.

The outfielder was seven for 12 with six runs batted in a three-game home conference series against Cal State Northridge, including an inside-the-park home run.

Alcantara, who finished the season on a 16-game hitting streak, stole a base and scored twice to help UCI (31-25, 11-13 in conference) win two of three against the Matadors.

In Saturday’s season finale, Alcantara was four for four with four RBIs, two runs and a walk. His inside-the-park home run in the game was only the second for UCI in the last 15 years and his ninth-inning double tied the score, 6-6. He later scored the winning run of a 7-6 triumph.

Brooks All-American

UC Irvine sophomore Mary Brooks has been named second-team All-American by the Assn. of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.

Brooks, the Big West Conference Player of the Year, led the Anteaters with 55 goals in 2016 and her 1.83 goals per game were third best in the conference.

She scored a season-high six goals against Long Beach State on Feb. 13, tying her No. 2 in the UCI single-game annals.
