Baseball: CdM sweeps doubleheader at South Coast Classic

Jake Hastings hit a grand slam and JT Schwartz drove in three runs on a double, helping Corona del Mar sweep a doubleheader at the South Coast Classic summer tournament at Newport Harbor High on Friday.

The Sea Kings edged Back Bay rival Newport Harbor, 5-4, in the first game, before they shut out Las Vegas Bishop Gorman No. 2, 8-0.

Kevin McCarthy, an incoming junior, threw 6 2/3 innings in the win against Newport Harbor, and future junior Tommy Paoletti earned the save.

Schwartz, an incoming freshman, went a combined three for seven with three runs batted in during the two games.

Future sophomore Garret Schwab added a two-run double in the first game for CdM.

Morgan Mannon, an incoming senior, threw the shutout for the Sea Kings in the second game.

Hastings belted the grand slam in the second game in which Schwartz, McCarthy and Robby Hurst, an incoming junior, added two hits apiece for CdM.

Newport Harbor incoming junior Jake Genova hit a home run and had two RBIs against CdM. Future seniors Rigsby Duncan and Christian Watson each went two for three, with Duncan driving in a run.

CdM, which is 2-1 during the tournament, plays Basic, from Henderson, Nev., on Saturday at Edison High at 11:30 a.m.

Newport Harbor resumes tournament play on Saturday at Canyon at 9 a.m.
