High School Roundup: Sage, CdM win twice in Dave Mohs tourney

Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sage Hill school won a pair of matches Friday to guarantee itself a berth in the Division I gold division (16-team championship bracket) that begins Saturday at Edison High.

The Lightning topped Long Beach Wilson, 25-21, 24-26, 15-11 and swept Vista Murrieta, 25-9, 25-19, in pool play on Friday at Huntington Beach High.

Holland McKenna had 23 combined kills, while Kekai Whitford added 19 and Jamie Dailey 13 for the Lightning, who wrap up pool play Saturday morning against Orange Lutheran.

Corona del Mar won both of its matches at home to secure a berth in the Division 1 gold division that begins Saturday at Edison High.

The Sea Kings beat Palos Verdes and Tesoro, 25-13, 25-16. Scores and statistics were not provided. CdM plays against Mater Dei Saturday morning to end pool play.

Newport Harbor split its two matches in pool play Friday.

The Sailors lost to Aliso Niguel, 34-32, 25-18 and beat M.L. King, 24-26, 25-19, 15-10.

Against Aliso, Gabby Shelly led Newport Harbor with 10 kills, Logan Grove added six kills and Elle Hagadorn amassed 28 assists.

Sammie Yeager had 14 digs and two aces for the Sailors in the second match, while, Jaclyn Brown had eight kills, Grove had seven kills and Hagadorn 30 assists. Kaitlyn Bell totaled five aces in the matches.

Newport Harbor plays against Carlsbad Saturday morning to close out pool play. If the Sailors win they will enter the top 16 bracket.

FOOTBALL

Viewpoint 45, Sage Hill 6

CALABASAS — Senior quarterback CJ McCord threw for 116 yards and rushed for a team-leading 47 yards on four carries for the visiting Lightning in the nonleague road game Friday afternoon.

McCord threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to senior Zach Burns in the third quarter for the Lightning’s lone score.

Junior Jake Fisher caught four passes for 39 yards and senior Vince Wetmore had four receptions for 35 yards for the Lightning (1-2).

Sage Hill, which trailed, 38-0, at halftime, had 44 rushing yards on 10 attempts as a team.

Junior outside linebacker Alfonso Corona led Sage Hill with seven tackles, while sophomore defensive end Jack Dickinson and Wetmore, a safety, each had one sack.

Viewpoint, which is averaging 43.6 points per game, improved to 3-0.

Newport Harbor 13, Mater Dei 5

FOUNTAIN VALLEY – Courtney Howarth and Elle Zielinski won two of three sets at No. 3 doubles for the Sailors in the nonleague match at Los Caballeros Racquet Club Friday.

Hannah Blower, the No. 2 singles player, and No. 3 Jenn Kingsley also won two of three sets for Newport Harbor (2-2), which plays at rival Corona del Mar on Tuesday.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Segerstrom tournament

SANTA ANA — Estancia High lost a pair of games on Friday at Segerstrom High.

The Eagles were bested, 16-9, by Laguna Hills and 17-8 by Rancho Alamitos to fall to 1-2.

Eli Sperling led the Eagles with five goals against Laguna Hills.

Jason Chesmore and Chris DeFrenza each had three combined goals in the two games for Estancia.
