College Roundup: UCI women’s soccer upsets No. 6 BYU

UC Irvine 1, BYU 0

PROVO, Utah — Natalia Ledezma scored off an assist from Zoya Farzaneh with 31 seconds left to give the Anteaters the upset over the No. 6-ranked Cougars Saturday.

Goalie Jennifer Randazzo made three saves for UCI (4-3).

The Anteaters and BYU (4-1-1) both had eight shots.

Farzaneh settled a ball and headed upfield feeding a through ball to Ledezma. With the seconds ticking away and the keeper approaching, Ledezma shoveled a shot to the left of Cougar keeper Erica Owens and into the back of the net to put the ‘Eaters up 1-0 after a long, hard-fought match.

Vanguard 2, Mobile 0

ORANGE BEACH , Ala. — Liliana Ruiz scored for the No. 2-ranked Lions, who also gained another tally on an own goal in the nonconference match against No. 8 Mobile Saturday.

Goalie Lauren Terry had two saves for Vanguard, which outshot Mobile, 14-9.

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — The unranked Lions stunned the No. 1-ranked hosts as three players scored and Luca Licciardi had two saves to preserve the shutout in the nonconference match on Saturday.

Angel Maldonado converted an assist from Nahum Paz in the 15th minute, Luke Kadillak cashed in an assist from Edgar Hernandez in the 35th minute and Juan Arenallo scored with an assist from Jesus Fregoso in the 46th minute to pace the Lions (2-2).

Vanguard posted a 14-8 edge in shots.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Inland Empire Classic

LA VERNE — UC Irvine won a pair of matches on Saturday at the University of La Verne to improve to 6-0 this season.

Senior Mitch Wise scored four goals to pace a 13-4 win over Cal Baptist and a trio of Anteaters scored three times in a 24-3 trouncing of La Verne.

Michael Bailey had 15 saves for UCI against Cal Baptist.

Against La Verne, Jacob Mourer, Blake terry and Chris Swieca had three goals apiece.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Wolverine Classic

OREM, Utah — Marisa Bubica and Aly Squires put away 13 kills apiece as UC Irvine (7-3) finished the week at 2-2 after a 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23 win over Idaho State Saturday to conclude action at the Wolverine Classic.

Cassidy Pickrell had 11 kills and led UCI (7-3) with three aces, while Arden Davis topped the Anteaters with 18 digs. Shelley Anderson had six kills to go along with 39 assists and six digs and Arielle Manz had five kills for the Anteaters, who also beat host Utah Valley, 25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 25-15.

Bubica had 21 kills and Pickrell added a personal-best 17 kills. Squires had 13 kills and 10 digs, while Shannon Fleming had 12 kills and five blocks. Davis had a career-high 22 digs and Anderson amassed a personal-best 55 assists.

Vanguard def. Cal State San Marcos

COSTA MESA — Jessica Neves and Kendall Haldi had 10 kills each to lead the No. 19-ranked Lions to a 25-14, 25-24, 25-23 nonconference win Saturday.

Kelly Heenana led Vanguard (11-2) with 22 digs, while Myranda Cunningham had 21 assists and Neves had 14 assists.

CSSM is 13-7.
