College Roundup: UCI wins Highlander Invitational

Highlander Invitational

RIVERSIDE – UC Irvine senior Isaiah Thompson was the top collegiate finisher and second overall and the Anteaters had five runners in the top 10 to earn the team title on Saturday at UC Riverside.

Thompson completed the 6,000-meter course in 17 mintues, 56.33 seconds to help UCI post 30 team points, 21 better than runner-up Cal State Fullerton.

Izzak Mireles (sixth in 18:09.56), Hector Garcia (eighth in 18:15.90), Nolan Del Valle (ninth in 18:17.17), and Branden Randall (10th in 18:17.97), also led UCI.

UCI competes in the Big West Conference Championships on Oct. 29 in Hawaii.

MEN’S SOCCER

UC Irvine 4, Cal State Northridge 3

The host Anteaters rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficit, then broke a 3-3 tie when Jose Ortiz used assists by Ivan Canales and Giovanni Godoy to score the game-winner in the Big West Conference game on Saturday.

Canales had UCI’s first two goals, both of which knotted the score, then Thomas Janjigian put UCI ahead in the 42nd minute.

Janjigian and Ortiz addes assists for the ‘Eaters (5-6-3, 2-2-2 in conference).

Northridge is 4-11, 2-4.

Menlo 1, Vanguard 0

ATHERTON – The visiting Lions were blanked for only the second time this season in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Saturday.

Menlo (11-2-1, 5-0-1 in conference) scored in the 18th minute.

Vanguard is 8-4, 3-4.

ATHERTON – Madison Lopp’s unassisted goal was the difference in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Saturday at Menlo College.

Menlo (7-4-2, 2-3-1 in conference) posted a 17-16 advantage in shots.

Vanguard improved to 11-3, 6-1.

Highlander Invitational

RIVERSIDE – UC Irvine freshman Anastasia Karnaze was 11th to lead the Anteaters to a fourth-place finish on Saturday at UC Riverside.

Karnaze completed the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 48.14 seconds.

Brenda Dorantes (17th in 18:15.75), Aliya Shah (18th in 18:16.05), and Marisa Gonzalez (21st in 18:19.14) also stood out for UCI.

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University split a pair of matches Saturday, bouncing back from a three-set loss to Montana Tech to defeat Golden State Athletic Conference foe Arizona Christian, 25-14, 25-21, 25-20,

Rabecca Lowden had 18 digs against ACU to help Vanguard improve to 10-14, 7-3 in conference.

The Lions fell to Montana Tech, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21.

Hawaii def. UC Irvine

HONOLULU – The Anteaters earned a set off the No. 17-ranked hosts, falling, 25-14, 25-21, 24-26, 25-18, in the Big West Conference match late Friday night.

Victoria Dennis led UCI (7-14, 2-5 in conference) with 14 kills, while Idara Akpakpa added 11 and hit .786.

Shelley Anderson had 41 assists and Harlee Kekauoha had 19 digs for UCI.

Hawaii is 13-5, 6-1.

Orange Coast 7, Norco 0

Sydnee Busby scored three times to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game on Friday.

Lupe Rodriguez had one goal and three assists, while Emily Malic added three assists for the winners (9-3-2, 6-2-1 in conference).

Clara Brennan, Kylie Robertson and Cintia Ruiz chipped in goals for OCC.

Norco is 3-8-2, 0-7-2.

SANTA ANA -- The host Dons scored in the 35th minute of the Orange Empire Conference clash Friday.

Golden West fell to 2-7-3, 1-5-3 in conference.

Santa Ana is 6-6-2, 2-5-2.

The host Anteaters were trounced in their Golden Coast Conference opener on Friday.

The No. 4-ranked Tigers improved to 13-4, 2-0 in conference and dropped UCI to 7-8, 0-1.

DAVIS – Noel Baham converted an Alex Karlowitsch assist in the 50th minute of the Big West Conference game Thursday.

UCI posted a 12-4 advantage in shots and Maddie Newsom had two saves to preserve the shutout.

The Anteaters are 10-4-1, 2-0-1 in conference.

UC Davis is 5-7-3, 1-2-1.

ROCKLIN – Alex Bachman headed in a corner kick from Haley Bruce in the 75th minute for the difference in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday.

Hayley Gonzalez brought No. 9-ranked Vanguard (10-3, 5-1 in conference) even, 1-1, in the 50th minute.

WJU is 4-8-1, 0-4-1.

The host Lions earned a 25-18, 24-15, 25-23 sweep in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Thursday.

Aubryn Coale had 11 kills and 18 digs to lead the winners (9-13, 6-3 in conference), who received 10 kills each from Hailey Gordon and Juanae Johnson.

Rory McLoy had 22 assists and Rabecca Lowden had 15 digs for Vanguard.

San Diego Christian is 11-12, 3-7.
