College Roundup: UCI men’s basketball controls Washington

SEATTLE — Junior forward Will Davis scored 22 points and 7-foot-6 freshman center Mamadou Ndiaye set a UC Irvine single-game record with nine blocked shots as the Anteaters defeated Washington, 86-72, in a men’s basketball nonconference game Seattle Thursday night.

Davis made 10 of 12 field-goal attempts and added seven rebounds and two blocked shots in the game, which was part of the 2K Sports Classic Seattle Regional.

Ndiaye flirted with a triple double, collecting 18 points, eight rebounds and the nine blocks. He made seven of nine field-goal tries in the best outing of his young career.

Freshman guard Luke Nelson had 11 points and six assists as UCI won its first game of the season in improving to 1-2.

The Anteaters, who led 38-36 at halftime, shot 59.6% for the game to Washington’s 37.5%.

C.J. Wilcox led the Huskies (1-1) with 24 points and Nigel Williams-Goss added 13.

This was UCI’s second straight win over a Pac-12 team, as the Anteaters defeated USC last December in Los Angeles.UCI is also 2-0 all-time against the Huskies.

RIVERSIDE — The visiting Anteaters hit .408 as a team to produce a 25-19, 25-18, 25-10 trouncing in the Big West Conference match on Thursday.

Aly Squires led the winners with 11 kills and hit a season-best .357, while Cassidy Pickrell had 10 kills and hit .292 to help UCI improve to 13-13, 4-8 in conference. Squires also had five block assists.

Arielle Manz (.438) and Marisa Bubica (.400) had eight kills apiece for UCI, for which Shelley Anderson had 40 assists. Manz led the Anteaters with seven block assists and Molly Yoder had a team-best eight digs.

Shannon Fleming had four kills on five swings for an .800 hitting percentage, while Anderson had six kills in nine attempts to his .667 for UCI.

Riverside (1-23, 0-12) hit .178 as a team

CERRITOS — Kellie Thorsness, a Costa Mesa High product, had eight goals to pace the No. 7-seeded Pirates in the fist round of the Southern California Regional playoffs on Thursday.

Audrey Hung had four goals for the OCC, which improved to 12-10.

No. 10-seeded Ventura is 18-10.

MALIBU — Senior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto had 14 points to lead the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Thursday.

Senior Camille Buckley had nine points, seven rebounds, three steals, one block and one assist for UCI (1-1), which was outrebounded, 48-39, and lost the turnover battle, 16-13.

Lauren Spinazze had six points, while Mokun Fejemisin had five points and Jazmyn White chipped in eight rebounds, three assists and two points.

Ea Shoushtari, a 5-foot-8 junior guard, had 21 points, 13 rebounds and six assists for the Waves (2-1).

UCI made seven of 18 from three-point range (38.9%), which was better than they shot from the field overall (30.6%, netting 19 of 62).
