LONDON — Newport Beach residents Julia Boserup and Coco Vandeweghe each advanced to the third round of women’s singles Thursday at the Wimbledon tennis championships.

Boserup upset No. 7-seeded Belinda Bencic, 6-4, 1-0 (retired), in the second round Thursday. Vandeweghe, seeded No. 27, got past Timea Babos of Hungary, 6-2, 6-3, on Thursday.

Boserup, ranked No. 225 in the world and making her Grand Slam debut, was ahead when Bencic retired, citing a left wrist injury.

Boserup, 24, had won three qualifying matches to earn a spot in the main draw. She then defeated Tatjana Maria of Germany, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, in the first round.

Boserup, who trains at the Newport Beach Tennis Club, will play either No. 32-seeded Andrea Petkovic or Elena Vesnina in the third round.

Vandeweghe, who formerly played for the Orange County Breakers, topped Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine, 6-2, 7-6, in the first round. She will face No. 6-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy in the third round.

Vandeweghe, 24, was a Wimbledon quarterfinalist a year ago, her best Grand Slam singles showing.

Dennis Novikov, a former UCLA standout and 2016 member of the OC Breakers, lost in four sets to No. 31-seeded Joao Sousa of Portugal, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in the second round of men’s singles.
