Bob Hope Airport unveils winning student artwork

Travelers at Bob Hope Airport can expect to see a new batch of aviation artwork coming this fall, as the airfield announced on Monday the winners of its “2013 Tower Banner Student Art Contest.”

For the sixth year, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority invited high school students from the three cities that over see the airfield to submit a piece of aviation-themed artwork – with the winners getting to see their piece enlarged to 16 feet by 26 feet and hung on the façade of the airport’s terminal tower.

This year’s theme was “The Sky’s the Limit,” and the first of the winning entries to be hung will be a portrait of Amelia Earhart by Sadie Goff from Pasadena High School, which will go up in September.

In December, a banner by Jordan Lopez, Melissa Alfaro, Shushanik Hovakimyan, Rachel Verharst, Daniel Kerkotchian, and Breanna French, all from John Burroughs High School in Burbank, will be displayed.

In March 2014, Nam Woo Kil from Crescenta Valley High School will see his artwork in the prominent placement.

The winners were chosen from 186 entries. Each school district winnowed down the entrants to the top three, and each city’s arts and culture commission then judged the finalists.

The original artwork by the first-place winners, along with the second- and third-place entrants from each district, will be displayed throughout Terminal B beginning in September, when next year’s contest will begin accepting entries.

In addition, the airport awarded $3,000 each to the Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena school districts, with the stipulation that the donation be used to support and promote their arts programs.
