Crescenta Valley High School student Sarah Worden performs with Glendale Youth Orchestra

The Glendale Youth Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Brad Keimach, will perform at 7 p.m. on March 11 at the Alex Theatre.

Fifteen-year-old Crescenta Valley High School student Sarah Worden performs a violin solo.

The program includes Beethoven: Coriolan Overture, Op. 62; Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto, 2nd and 3rd movements, Sarah Worden, violin; Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 11.

The Glendale Youth Orchestra has also been selected as a Premier LA Phil Youth Orchestra Mentorship Program and will be performing at Disney Hall on May 5. Only four youth orchestras from Los Angeles County were chosen for this high honor.

The program is funded in part by a grant from the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.

A silent auction to benefit the scholarship program will take place in the lobby of the theater beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10. and may be purchased from the Alex Theatre box office. Groups of 15 or more get 15% off. Students, children and seniors may purchase tickets for $8.50 each, by calling 818-243-ALEX, or visiting www.alextheatre.org.

Formed in 1989 by a group of Glendale music lovers and school teachers, the Glendale Youth Orchestra now attracts talented young musicians in sixth grade through college from all over Los Angeles, and the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys. Auditions for membership in the orchestra are ongoing, and may be arranged by calling the Glendale Youth Orchestra at (818) 321-3083.

About the Conductor

Brad Keimach, a graduate of New York’s Juilliard School, Keimach studied conducting with Leonard Bernstein, and holds an MFA from the Purchase Conservatory of the State University of New York.

About the Soloist

Sarah Worden is a sophomore at Crescenta Valley High School. She began her violin studies at the age of 7 under the instruction of Herman Markosian at the Metzler Violin Shop in Glendale. For the last 4 1/2 years she has also been studying with his brother, Boris Markosian, who lives in Moscow, Russia (via Skype).

Sarah was a participant of the 2009 Pasadena Pops Side By Side Orchestra and an auditor of the 2008 Pasadena Pops Side By Side Orchestra. She placed first in the intermediate level of the 2010 Callie McGrath Competition, was a finalist in the 2011 LA Phil Young Musicians Competition, and a finalist in the 2009 Valley Cultural Competition. She is also a section leader in her high school symphonic orchestra. Aside from playing the violin, she enjoys playing soccer, biking, hiking, and running. She is on the girl’s varsity soccer team at her high school and on the GU17 team at Crescenta Valley Soccer Club.

About Glendale Youth Orchestra

The GYO’s mission is based on the belief that young people have a better chance of succeeding in their world if they appreciate and participate in its rich artistic and cultural traditions. GYO provides young musicians in grades six through 12 with a unique opportunity to play classical music under the direction of Juilliard trained conductor, Brad Keimach, who studied with the legendary Leonard Bernstein.

The GYO is a resident company of the Alex Theatre. The GYO is also a Premier LA Phil Youth Orchestra Mentorship Program.

In 2007, GYO was selected to be a Los Angeles Philharmonic Youth Partner Orchestra, which provides the members quality time to meet and learn from the Philharmonic members.
