In favor of GCC’s ban on smoking

Share

Congratulations to the Glendale Community College Board of Trustees for deciding to make the campus smoke-free this fall. This took considerable courage to do.

It is interesting and supporting that UCLA just enacted its campus tobacco ban on Earth Day, April 22, with plans for all 10 UC campuses to go smoke-free by 2014.

This, of course, will cause smokers to scream that their personal freedom is being squelched. I do agree that unfortunately they do have the personal freedom to smoke, fuel their addiction and slowly commit suicide. But they definitely do not have the right to subject others to their poisonous emanations, or to toss their smoking debris near and far. Those who can’t or don’t want to overcome their addiction will need to go somewhere other than Glendale College this fall, allowing the large majority there to enjoy a healthier, more enjoyable and cleaner campus.
