Success sweetens lemonade fundraiser

Share

Students from Rosemont Middle School and Crescenta Valley High School coordinated their second annual Lemonade Stand benefiting breast cancer awareness on July 15.

The four girls — Leah Gharibian, 12, Deena Gharibian, 13, Lara Rostomian, 14, and Nairi Rostomian, 16 — put in many hours making posters and painting T-shirts to wear, said Talin Gharibian. The day before the event, they spent 13 hours baking goodies to accompany the ice-cold pink lemonade. They added breast cancer ribbons in a creative fashion to every treat — in swirls of sprinkles or pink frosting, ribbon stickers on the individually wrapped baked goods, and pink ribbon chocolate molds. They also handed out cancer awareness bracelets. They covered all their own expenses, and 100% of the donations went to the Pink Ribbon Facility at Glendale Adventist Medical Center.

They raised $2,100 in seven hours while spreading awareness of breast cancer. Local businesses contributed $600. They are Sake Sushi in Montrose, Cañada Dental, Raffi’s Place, Carousel Restaurant, Montrose Quiznos, Polkatots, Montrose Jewelers, Thompson Bros. Cleaners, Lara’s Gifts, Foxy’s Restaurant in Glendale, Critters, Rocky Cola Cafe, Lucile Cowle Swim School in Burbank and Shahen Sarkissian.

Altrusa honors middle school youth

Altrusa International Inc. of Glendale honored Glendale middle school students at a luncheon at Marie Callender’s Restaurant in June. The honorees were Stephanie Rodriguez, from Roosevelt Middle School; Alissa Fernandez, from Rosemont Middle School; Mateen Hassan, from Toll Middle School; and Danielle Udarbe, from Wilson Middle School.

These young people have distinguished themselves by leadership and service within their schools and in the community. Their service efforts include tutoring, feeding the homeless and church-affiliated service that includes mission trips to other states and countries.

Pat Zayas, committee chairwoman, presented each student with a $200 cash award, a plaque from Altrusa and a certificate of merit from the office of Assemblyman Mike Gatto.

Glendale Altrusa has been celebrating middle school students for more than 30 years.

Foundation gives nearly $90K in scholarships

The Community Foundation of the Verdugos awarded 67 students close to $90,000 in scholarships recently at the Embassy Suites Hotel.

The amount given to students is the result of 13 scholarship funds managed by the foundation. A special feature was the recognition of the first Gonzales Harris Bilingual Scholarship recipients Delfin Acosta, Adrian Alvarez and Jorge Barriga. The award was created to enable bilingual Spanish English students to attain their college dreams.

The recipients are eligible to renew their awards each year until they complete their education. Three new awards will be issued each year in addition to renewals. Porto’s Bakery, thanks to Honorary Scholarship chairwoman Betty Porto, provided gift certificates for all students.

Students accepted to summer program

Students from Glendale and Burbank were accepted to the Armenian National Committee of America — Glendale’s Summer Internship Program. Participating in the 12-week program are Sevag Alexanian, Alique Berberian, Tatevik Manucharyan, Pauline Pechakjian and Gevork Terzyan.

They will complete several projects concerning civic engagement, educational policies and programs and will collaborate to organize various community forums.
