Pellet rifle seized in park

NORTH GLENDALE — Police on Monday seized an Airsoft pellet rifle from a man who allegedly was shooting at rabbits in Brand Park.

A hiker notified a park employee about 1:31 p.m. after seeing the man, whose name wasn’t released, shooting toward the mountains, police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

Firing any weapon in the park violates city regulations, he said.

A police helicopter helped officers find the man, but he had dropped the rifle somewhere in the park after hearing the helicopter, Lorenz said. They searched for the rifle and retrieved it about 30 minutes later.

The man admitted to police that he was shooting at rabbits, Lorenz said.

He wasn’t arrested, Lorenz said, because the hiker, who was the only witness, left the scene and didn’t provide any personal information.

The investigation remains ongoing.
