Trio receive grants from city employee fund
Members of the Glendale Employees’ Endowment Fund have chosen the Glendale YMCA Police Athletic League, Glendale Educational Foundation and Glendale Assn. for the Retarded to receive a total of $7,300 in grants.
Officials with the Community Foundation of the Verdugos worked with those of the Glendale Employee Endowment Fund to decide which community service organizations would receive the funding.
The Glendale YMCA Police Athletic League will use the $3,000 grant for its boxing/dance/drama program for at-risk youth. Glendale Educational Foundation will put the $3,100 toward musical instruments for use in its music education program. With its $1,200 donation, the Glendale Assn. for the Retarded will buy a defibrillator for one of its three group homes.
City of Glendale employees established their own donor-advised fund in 1998 with just $330. Today, the fund has grown to more than $84,000, providing grants to Glendale nonprofits like Glendale Memorial Health Foundation, the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry and Friends of the Public Library.
‘Roses’ dinner benefits hospital
Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center’s Emergency Room will benefit from the 25th annual “Evening of Wine and Roses” on Oct. 7 on the hospital grounds.
Social time, featuring a silent auction, begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by wine tasting, fine cuisine, entertainment and dancing at 7 p.m.
Funds raised will go to charity care for patients being treated at Glendale Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department, officials said. Last year, a total of $8,525,415 was provided to more then 4,567 individuals — almost four times the number of people in 2010.

Caregivers could win a cruise
A lucky caregiver will receive a vacation cruise for two and care for their family member as first prize in a contest offered through a partnership between the Burbank-based Home Instead Senior Care, the Stroke Assn. of Southern California and the Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center.
Glendale residents are invited to nominate family caregivers — or themselves — for the opportunity to win a free five-night, six-day Caribbean cruise for two. The caregiver must be providing care for a loved one who is 55 years of age or older.
In addition, each of four runners-up will receive a gift certificate to a local spa and respite care for their family member.
Those entering the contest must write, in 500 words or less, the reasons why the nominated caregivers deserve to win. The Caregiver Stress Management Cruise on the Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas is scheduled to set sail from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Feb. 25 and return to dock on March 2. Stops will be made in Labadee, Haiti, and Falmouth, Jamaica.
In addition to the cruise, the winning recipient and guest will receive airfare to, and an overnight stay in, Fort Lauderdale. Also in the package will be free respite care from a Home Instead Senior Care professional caregiver for the winner’s senior loved one for the duration of the cruise.
