Business woman nominated for top honor
The American Business Women’s Assn. named Martha Preciado, M.D., of Tujunga, one of the Top 10 Business Women of the Year.
The national ABWA honors 10 outstanding members for achieving excellence in career, education and community involvement each year. One of the 10 will be selected to represent the association as the American Business Woman of ABWA during the national conference from Oct. 11 to 13 in Memphis.
Dr. Preciado is a six-year member and leader of Glendale’s ABWA Verdugo Glen chapter, where she has served as vice president, Woman of the Year 2011, Education and Fundraising Events Chairwoman, and on many committees. The chapter has members from Burbank and Glendale.
She received her medical degree from UCLA where she is an Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine. Dr. Preciado is president and chief executive officer of Preciado Cardiology in Los Angeles where she treats and educates the community in cardiovascular disease, especially among Latinos. In 2011, she traveled to Kitale, Kenya to visit villages and tribes, providing supplies and educational services related to cardiovascular disease.
Leading the Kiwanis to growth
Recruiting new members and starting new projects are the goals for Mercy Velazquez when she takes the reins as president of the Glendale Kiwanis Club. She is the fourth female to hold the title with the service club.
The catchword for her term is growth.
“Your membership grows and your potential for service grows,” says the energetic volunteer.
As a member, she said she has grown stronger as a person, making new best friends while giving back to the community.
“I never imagined myself being surrounded with this kind of love and giving,” she said. “When you join Glendale Kiwanis, you automatically belong to their family.”
Aside from Kiwanis, Velazquez also gives her time to Glendale Assn. for the Retarded, is on the Advisory Board for the Glendale Police Chief, is past president of the Glendale Latino Assn., past president of the Montrose - Verdugo Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the Arturo Sandoval Institute and Save the Music.
She is employed as part of the marketing team of Sadd-Velazquez-Higashi-Shammaa, CPAs & Advisors.
“I’ve been working with my husband Mike for over 20 years. He’s the accountant and I’m the one that counts!” she quipped.
She will be installed at a banquet on Sept. 27 at the Glendale Hilton Hotel, 100 N. Glenoaks Blvd., Glendale. Reception begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30. Tickets are $50 and can be reserved by calling Mike Sholer at (818) 502-1988.
Wine and Roses benefits emergency room
My apologies to Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center for incorrectly publishing the use of the funds raised by this year’s 25th annual Evening of Wine and Roses on Oct. 7. Proceeds will help to renovate the Emergency Department to meet its growing needs.
The event is an elegant soiree with silent auction and social time beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by wine tasting, fine cuisine, entertainment and dancing beginning at 7.
