North Shore Burgers partners with nonprofits
North Shore Burgers partnered with the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge for a fundraiser on Sept. 11 with 10% of the restaurant’s proceeds to be donated to the Community Center.
“This is a great way for local community businesses and nonprofits to partner together,” said La Cañada City Council member Michael Davitt, co-owner of North Shore Burgers.
North Shore Burgers has invited area nonprofits to participate in its Tuesday Fundraising Days.
“Our preschool families, teachers, instructors, participants and friends attended the fundraiser at North Shore Burgers and everyone had a great time supporting the cause,” said Deb Jordan, executive director of the Community Center. “One of our staffers had her birthday party for 20 people on the patio.”
Homes from city’s golden days still glow
One has to applaud the tenacity of volunteers and patrons who braved the hottest day of the year to support the Glendale Historical Society’s 2012 Home Tour on Sunday.
This year’s event was titled “Glendale’s Golden Age: Distinctive Homes of the 1920s and 1930s.” In his president’s message in the program, Greg Grammer explained how between the 1920s and ’30s Glendale’s population zoomed from 13,756 to 62,736. The increase prompted the development of several new residential neighborhoods.
Four of the homes on the tour were examples of the Spanish Colonial Revival style, which was the dominant architectural style here, as well as throughout the region, in the early 20th century. Also on display was a Tudor Revival style, popular in Glendale at the time. It was inspiring to see how well homeowners had kept the original integrity of each home so that it was difficult to tell what portions had been remodeled or added to the properties. What most had in common were patios appointed with potted flowers and lush foliage — just perfect for intimate dinners for two or lavish parties of 20.
Adding a whimsical feel to the tour was the courtyard of a Storybook cottage built by C.E. Weaver, a landscape architect and contractor. It is believed to have been designed by Benjamin W. Sherwood, who also designed Disney Court, an eight-unit bungalow court built on Griffith Park Boulevard in Los Feliz in 1931. Located adjacent to the early home of Walt Disney Studios, the court was known as the Snow White Cottages and is said to have been the inspiration for the dwarfs’ cottage in Disney’s 1937 classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”
Docents kept people moving swiftly though each residence and, despite the heat, it was a very enjoyable afternoon.
Residents perform with chorale
Area residents will perform with the Los Angeles Master Chorale as it launches its 49th season at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
They are Glendale residents Suzanne Anderson (soprano), Bradley Chapman (tenor), Greg Davies (tenor), Sal Malaki (tenor), Helene Quintana (alto) and La Crescenta resident Jody Golightly (tenor).
The pipe organ and choral music extravaganza will be led by Music Director Grant Gershon. Special guests include organists Paul Meier and Kimo Smith and the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, under the direction of Anne Tomlinson.

Rotary Club vies in boat race
The Crescenta-Cañada Rotary Club set sail for the District 5280 Picnic with not just one, but two entries in the cardboard boat race on Sept. 9 at Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach.
Fifth Mate (and club president) Robert Ippolito and Captain Lynn Chen did their club proud, piloting the USS CCRC boats.
Boat #1 was called the F150 Speed Racer and Boat #2 was named Hot Tub Heaven.
They rowed and paddled their way along the course almost winning the first heat with Speed Racer. But, alas, eventually they were eliminated. Then they took the club’s second entry, Hot Tub, for a spin. Robert’s powerful strokes sent the little boat in many fast circles. Captain Lynn wisely headed for shore after covering one-half the course going around in circles.
They were cheered on by fellow CCRCrs Joe and Mary Ann Kroening, Gavin Dinger, Rahla Lindsey, Drew Frolich, Tammy and Tommy Chen plus their friends and many Rotary friends from other clubs.
The race was followed by a picnic along with a dunk tank, water balloon-tossing contests, tug of wars and more. The crowd was estimated at approximately 1,000.
