The Crosby Chronicles: Prop. 30 passage should stop losses

Share

Whew! I sense a sigh of relief among California teachers that Proposition 30 narrowly passed.

Many of us educators were bracing for uncharted territory come January when even more budget cuts would have to be implemented. Who would lose their job?

How many school days would children lose? It wasn’t that long ago when two things were guaranteed in regards to teachers and public schools: teachers never lost their jobs, and students never lost school days. Today, neither one is true.

The passing of Prop. 30 ensures that the losses stop. Very soon, let’s hope that school districts like Burbank Unified, who had to cut the school calendar, can restore it to the minimum 180 days of instruction.

It’s reassuring to know that enough taxpayers care about education whether they still have children attending school or not. An educated populace positively impacts us all. Now that school districts up and down the state have dodged a silver bullet, it’s time for California lawmakers to find permanent solutions to the never-ending annual budget issues that befall the state, inevitably impacting education the most.
