Relay for Life in Glendale raises $85,000 for cancer research

More than 900 people took part in the American Cancer Society’s 9th annual Relay for Life at the Scholl Canyon baseball fields in Glendale this weekend, helping to raise $85,000 for cancer research.

At least one member of each team remained in the relay, which occurred from 10 a.m. Saturday through 10 a.m. Sunday.

The walk began with a “Survivor’s Lap,” in which dozens of cancer survivors rounded the first lap to cheers.

“We’re honoring them as well as remembering people who have been lost,” said event organizer Briana Maldonado.

Glendale Mayor Frank Quintero welcomed participants with City Manager Scott Ochoa, who shared how cancer claimed the life of his father and mother-in-law.

“I’m here for them,” Ochoa said. “Each and every one of you have that same story. The best part of being human is when we share our humanity and when we share those stories. Because as long as we talk about what they gave us, they never die.”
