Historic book store to be honored

Once Upon a Time Bookstore, the Montrose business that Publishers Weekly certified in 2008 was the country’s oldest children’s bookstore, is being recognized next month as Small Business of the Year for the 25th state Senate District. Sen. Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge) will honor the Honolulu Avenue business during a ceremony in Sacramento on May 25. Glendale News-Press

JPL tickets sell out fast

It took about one hour and 45 minutes for 30,000 free tickets to JPL’s revamped public event to sell out. Online visitors were able to select an estimated arrival time to help prevent the clogging of parking lots and city streets in La Cañada — a common sight in recent years, when the extravaganza drew upward of 45,000 visitors and forced the facility to turn people away. Burbank parades on

At the 35th annual Burbank on Parade this past Saturday, heroes were celebrated and neighbors connected as the event expanded to an all-day celebration. The parade’s theme was “Our Heroes,” which included several grand marshals. Organizers estimated approximately 10,000 people attended. Burbank Leader

Stepping up and sewing on

When Burbank High School junior and chapter member Danielle Boyce, 16, heard that fewer and fewer businesses have been willing to donate clothing to the National Charity League fashion show, she took it upon herself to take on the project of making 12 custom, handmade dresses for the Ticktockers — the daughter members of the nonprofit — for this year’s show, which will be held Saturday at the Los Angeles Marriott next to Bob Hope Airport. Fiesta of the Spanish Horse rides back into town

Over a dozen horses will be dancing, prancing and galloping around the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank for a local nonprofit’s biggest fundraiser for the year. From Thursday to Sunday, the nonprofit Fiesta of the Spanish Horse will hold its annual festival that raises money for cancer research. This year’s donation recipient will be Kure It Cancer Research, based in Irvine. Burbank Leader

A massive call for justice

Tens of thousands of protesters rallied outside the Turkish Consulate on Wilshire Boulevard on Sunday afternoon, waving flags and holding signs to commemorate the 101st anniversary of the Armenian genocide. Dressed in purple and black shirts scrawled with messages calling for justice, the activists demanded reparations. Los Angeles police estimated the crowd at 60,000. Los Angeles Times

Taste returns

Organizers of the 15th annual Taste of Downtown Glendale are getting ready to serve up food and fun along Brand Boulevard next week. From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. next Wednesday, ticket holders can pop into restaurants for samples, have wine or beer at designated locations and enjoy entertainment along Brand. Glendale News-Press

This Sunday, one man and several women — some of them mothers, all of them with stories to tell about mothers — will share their personal stories about moms at the Colony Theatre. Rosemont Middle School teacher dies at 43

Students and staff at Rosemont Middle School began the week mourning the loss of a teacher who died on Friday after suffering a massive heart attack, according to Kelly King, assistant superintendent of Glendale Unified. Mark Sanderl became ill at Rosemont Friday afternoon and was taken to USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, where he died at 2:30 p.m. He was 43 years old. Glendale News-Press

BUSD designates month of commemoration

Within Burbank schools, April will now be recognized as the Armenian Genocide of 1915 Commemoration Month, following a resolution that school board member Armond Aghakhanian introduced last Thursday. The Burbank school board passed the item with a 3-2 vote, after hearing multiple students and adults encourage its passage on April 21, a few days ahead of April 24, which marked 101 years since the beginning of the genocide. Survey says…

Discipline, counselor availability, staff morale and understanding homework corrections were among discussion points in the fifth consecutive La Cañada Unified School District-wide survey, which revealed that 91% of parents of students in grades 7-12 would recommend the district to other families and 90% of elementary school parents believe its campuses offer a supportive environment. What makes a “McMansion?”

Burbank city officials will host a community meeting on Thursday to discuss what residents would like single-family homes to look like in the city. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. in room 104 at the Community Services Building, 150 N. Third St. Attendees can tell city planners and other officials what designs they deem appropriate for houses as the city grows. Burbank Leader
