Police closed westbound lanes of Glenoaks Boulevard from Pacific and Kenilworth avenues after a woman was hit by a car Monday morning, according to Glendale police.

Man makes citizen’s arrest on suspected car thief

A determined theft victim thwarted a second hit on his apartment complex parking garage when he held the suspected thief at gunpoint and zip-tied his hands until cops showed up, police said. Glendale resident Arthur Sandrosyan, who reportedly confessed to both burglaries, was charged this week with two counts of residential burglary, police said. Glendale News-Press

Burbank police plan to pitch new recruitment plan

Staffing shortages are requiring Burbank police officers to work well beyond their normal shifts, driving up overtime and burnout while bringing down morale and opportunities to advance, multiple police sources said. In response to the staffing issue, police officials this week plan to present the City Council a “forward-thinking” recruitment plan, which includes accelerated testing for military personnel and sworn officers seeking transfers from other departments, as well as hiring more human resources employees to process and test applicants. Woman dies after being struck by car

Shortly before she was struck and killed by a car Monday morning, a woman in her 30s was suspected of stealing a cellphone and set of keys from a Glendale business, police said. The woman was in an unmarked crosswalk less than a block away when she was struck by an oncoming car, authorities said. Paramedics took the woman to a hospital, where she died. Glendale News-Press

Film on Armenian Genocide premieres this week

The new film “Armenia, My Love,” featuring Glendale actress Shake Tukhmanyan, depicts the deadly travails many Armenians were subject to in 1915, when the Ottoman Empire began systematically killing more than 1.5 million of them in an effort to force them out of their historic homeland. The movie premieres Thursday at the Laemmle Playhouse 7 in Pasadena, then extends to the MGN Five Star Cinema in Glendale and the Laemmle NoHo 7 in North Hollywood on Friday. Glendale News-Press

Relay in the rain

Despite a rainy start, Relay for Life of the Foothills kicked off Saturday morning with more than 200 people on 26 teams raising money for the American Cancer Society. This year’s fundraising goal is $48,000, which can be raised until August. As of Saturday, teams had raised about $38,000. Glendale News-Press

Founding principal of Clark Magnet to retire

Doug Dall, Clark Magnet High School’s first and only principal, announced to his staff on Monday that he will retire at the end of the school year after working as an educator in Glendale for 36 years. Dall has overseen the nationally recognized science and technology magnet school for the past 18 years. Glendale News-Press

Goals in mind

Burbank educators and school board members combed through eight districtwide goals and many more subgoals during a lengthy meeting last week, and offered up suggestions to make progress on new and existing targets during the 2016-17 school year. Beyond technology training, professional development for teachers emerged as a key focus, including in addressing students’ social and emotional needs as well as in teaching writing. Burbank Leader
