Andy Reid to be fired

NFL.com has confirmed multiple reports that coach Andy Reid has been informed that he would be fired following the final game of a disappointing 4-12 season, a 42-7 loss to the New York Giants. Philadelphia Eagles’ owner Jeffrey Lurie is expected to make a formal announcement on Monday.

Reid, the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL at 14 seasons, has led the Eagles to a 130-92-1 record, including nine playoff appearances and one Super Bowl appearance, since taking over in 1999.

“Either way, I understand,” said Reid, who was an offensive lineman at Glendale Community College from 1976 to 1977 before transferring to Brigham Young University. “This is a business that I’ve chosen. I’ve been very fortunate to have been here as long as I have.”

Several coaches have been discussed as potential potential replacements for Reid in 2013, including New Orleans Saints’ head coach Sean Payton, San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and the University of Oregon head coach Chip Kelly.

As for Reid, the firing caps an emotional year for the 54-year old coach, who lost his son, Garrett, in August. Nevertheless, Reid has said that he wants to coach next season regardless of his fate in Philadelphia, sparking rumors that he might be lured back to his native California to replace Norv Turner, but the San Diego Chargers are reportedly pursuing other options.
